After battling the Lib Dems for years in Bristol over transport issues (until 2008), I could never trust or believe anything they say on transport.

Im all for reopening lines etc etc

However Mr Clegg needs to have a look in his own back yard first , In the district of the MP's area is the busy station of Dore and Totley on the Sheffield Midland - Manchester line , it has 1 platform and a service of every 2hrs off peak , the locals wanted the station to have 4 platforms again thus connecting with Chesterfield / Nottingham as it was before , what they are getting is just 1 extra platform on the Manchester lines and that wont happen until 2014 if ever :roll:

If there is a campaign to make Dore station a 4-platform interchange, I have to say that the campaigners are keeping very quiet about it. I have not heard of it.

The campaign to restore double track though Dore on the Manchester-Sheffield section of the triangle is well known and is supported by many including the Lib Dems. I am sure this come about; I hope the campaigners keep up the pressure to get it done quickly. I guess the restoration of the second platform will be part of this scheme.

(most accidents can be reduced by better road design, barriers, lighting etc).

Or by drivers driving to the conditions, every-one talks about dangerous roads but I have never driven on a road that jumped up and attacked me! Most "accidents", well crashes actually, are caused by the nut behind the wheel, plain and simple, if people were held accountable things may improve but I dont hold out much hope.

Yes, but just as speed limits appear to be for the lowest common denominator (which is why they're so stupidly low in many cases), you have to consider the fact that there are lots of idiots on the road.

You can design roads to reduce the chances of collisions, which can only be a good thing even though I agree with your point 100%.

just as Mr. Lambert's mare had done. On this occasion the rider
again escaped with very little injury, but the horse was killed.
Fifty-six years later, in 1827, and for the third time, a similar
accident took place. Mr. John Nicholson, a Newcastle surgeon, was
riding along Sandyford Lane when his horse bolted and leaped
the parapet, kicking down the coping stone, but this time it was the
horse which escaped injury and the rider who was killed.
So . . bad driving? Bad horse training ?
Nope.

It was the road that was dangerous :
Newcastle Monthly Chronicle for 1887 said:
soon the Drop Well ravine itself, . . . , will be filled up ; and there will be no more need of the parapet wall, and it too shall be levelled and cleared away.
