Blue Line Station Canopy Collapses After Possible Lightning Strike

Blue Line trains were halted Sunday evening due to a possible lightning strike hitting the tracks, according to the Chicago Transit Authority and fire officials. Shortly before 7 p.m., the canopy along a pedestrian ramp collapsed at the Illinois Medical District station located at 430 S. Damen Ave on Chicago's Near West Side, according to the CTA.

The CTA tweeted just after 7 p.m. that trains were standing at Illinois Medical District due to an obstruction and crews were working to restore service. The aluminum canopy fell the the tracks, officials said, and video of the incident shows large sparks igniting among the damage. Preliminary reports indicated the cause of the damage was a lightning strike, according to the Chicago Fire Department, but the investigation is ongoing. No injuries were reported, authorities said, but a nearby train was evacuated. A spokesperson for the CTA said that the concrete flooring of the ramp is still in place, though the extent of the damage was not immediately known. The length of the delay was unclear, though crews were working to restore normal operations in time for the morning commute.
