There’s a couple of older threads below which might come in handy?

Waterlooville in East Hampshire has already been mentioned....but the nearby village of Horndean - and its conjoined neighbours in the same parish, Cowplain and Catherington - have a combined population of more than 12,000. Nearest station: Rowlands Castle (2.2 miles from the centre of Horndean.
Newport (Isle of Wight) (25k) - now of course I suppose we should confine this list it to mainland UK but the IOW does have a railway with stations!
....not to mention Cowes, East and West!

What about largest towns more than 5 miles from a railway, tram, or metro station. (As the crow flies, from the town centre)
Witney just about doesn't count, but it should because the station in question is Finstock but for largest town, I'd guess Wisbech.
I think Peterhead (~26 miles from Dyce) is the largest on the island of Great Britain more than twenty miles from a station.

Adjacent to Heckmondwike are the other Spen Valley towns of Cleckheaton and Liversedge which were formerly along the same line/s and both also have populations of over 10000.
Otley is another former rail-served town in West Yorkshire of over 10000.
Yes im aware of this, I just used it as an example because if i remember correctly its the biggest of the three, Thank you for correcting this though

Maldon in Essex - population 14,941 in the 2021 Census. Witham is the nearest station but the town will be served via the A414 by the new Beaulieu Park station when it opens.

Rushden in Northamptonshire (32,308) doesn't have a station on the main national network. It does have a station on the heritage Rushden, Higham and Wellingborough Railway, and there are proposals to open a station to the west of the town on the Midland Main Line.

I think this thread might be shorter if it listed those that do have a station. It seems that it's not unusual for a town of 10,000 not to have a station.

There were 625 towns or urban areas (which means some have been counted twice) with at least 10,000 people in England and Wales according to the 2019 population estimates. That being said, of the 32 in the 10,000-10,999 range, only Thirsk, Ludlow, Camborne, Polesworth, Whitchurch (Salop), Bingham and Wivenhoe have stations.

Edit: of the 208 estimated in the 10,000-19,999 range, around a hundred have a station. Around seventy of the 99 in the 20,000-29,999 do. By 30,000-39,999 it's 33 out of 40 (Canvey Island, Peterlee if Horden doesn't count, Wisbech, Bideford, Witney, Midsomer Norton / Radstock and Consett without) so I think somewhere around the 25,000 mark is when a town's considerably likelier than not to have a station.

As above, Abingdon should also be in this list (excluding Radley and Culham as possible alternatives)

I think Rawtenstall, Ramsbottom, Bo'ness, Caernarfon and Swanage in that category have more than 10,000 people each as well.

I was just going to mention Rawtenstall. It has a population of 23,000 but acts as a centre for the towns and villages near by so it is a huge place not to have a railway station. It does have the heritage east lancs Railway which does sort of double up as a commuter service but it is slow and expensive for that. It also functions in many ways as a Greater Manchester commuter town despite being in Lancashire (although on the border with GM) it really does need a direct line into Manchester.
