Liverpool St James - reopening - new name will be Liverpool Baltic

I think the thinking is that the city centre will expand towards Liverpool Baltic and hence will be regarded as a city centre rather than a suburban station.

Regardless, the only city centre Merseyrail station that uses a "Liverpool" prefix is Liverpool Central and that's probably only because there's a Birkenhead Central.

I wouldn't give that too much weight: down in London, St Martin-in-the-Fields definitely isn't. ;)
It was in the fields when originally built outside of Londons walls and has just kept the name. St James was renamed “in the city” back in 2010 when it was re-opened after being derelict for a long time.

All this talk about what will the station be named. To be frank most locals/commuters will not care what it is called.
except non locals heading to party party will probably benefit from a name that is meaningful for them in 2022.
