The wording now being put out for parts of Yorkshire that from 22nd Sep (tomorrow) it will be illegal to meet anyone in a private home or garden unless part of a support bubble, and it is "strongly advised" not to socialise with anyone outside of a support bubble in any public venues (including pubs, restaurant and bars). This is paraphrased from the BBC Yorkshire Facebook page

Can't help but think the last bit isn't really worth the paper it is written on and on the former, I would be interested to see if it has been passed into law (previous experience tells us the message and what gets enacted into law can be quite different things!)

The former was and still is in the Statutory Instrument for the Bradford and North of England restrictions. Although both have been amended numerous times it's hard to keep track of what is what.

When I looked the other day there was nothing barring social gatherings between households in venues other than private houses or gardens.

Having said that I know that pubs have been told they have to enforce the no interaction guidance. I have just booked a table for lunch tomorrow in one of my favourite local pubs for me and my parents (who are now concerned about a further lockdown, as having spent months isolated earlier this year they have particularly enjoyed meeting up with friends and family again and do not want a lock down again, despite both being in mid 70s and in one case with underlying health conditions), and was quizzed about whether it was "my own household or my support bubble" I was booking for. I know from the facebook sites of various pubs that they are all saying the same message, that Bradford Council officers have been around and done inspections and told them they must only accept bookings for individual households or bubbles, even though there is nothing in law about this.

Yet.

Bolton's hospitality shut down 18 days ago when the rate was 190.
How come places like Bury still have the pubs open?
Surely Bolton should be able to open hospitality as businesses are being crippled.
Also what is happening in Bolton is proof that pubs and restaurants are not the problem.

With such restrictions I do wonder if it can even be profitable for pubs and restaurants to actually open. I might be wrong here, but I would guess most people going to pubs are meeting people outside their household so such a rule must be taking away most of their business.

I would not be surprised if many pubs decide it is better for their business to close until such restrictions end.

I think that the advising in various areas of households not meeting anyone outside the household indoors or out, needs to be knocked on the head, frankly.

Hospitality businesses in Bolton can re-open on Saturday in line with the rest of Greater Manchester.

I notice that the latest versions of these so-called local restrictions include a restriction to essential travel only, as well not being able to mix with other households at all, amongst other things.

I'm going to call them what they are - a lockdown by stealth, and I can't help feeling that they're disproportionate and unjustifiable.

I did note, perhaps cynically, that Hancock said he'd put any national measures to Parliament, knowing, no doubt, that he doesn't intend on applying them on a national basis, simply creeping them in on a local basis, blaming "local leaders[1]" instead.

I was disappointed that Parliament didn't vote against extending the Coronavirus Act, not because I have a problem with the measures, but because I see no reason they should not be voted on by Parliament before applying now things have settled down.

[1] I hate that term - it's very Soviet - "local politicians", please. They don't "lead" me, they couldn't lead an old lady across the road.

It looks like the positive test rate has gone up in Kirklees again this week - up to 100.5 per 100k (from 92.5 last week)

So obviously the local lockdown there is working. :s

If it doesn't work, that means they need to do more of it. Then when that doesn't work, more again, and so on... That has to be the reason - it can't be because the measures were actually pointless.

Probaby the people of Huddersfield can loook forward to more petty restrictions shortly.

Quite!

What I want to know is where they are finding these half people - I know Kirklees people are weird but... (for avoidance of forum doubt, I’m being very tongue in cheek!)

28 extra positives, that must be some kind of rounding error record. Definitely won't be entirely due to students or anything.

Obviously cause to mandate face mask wearing everywhere outdoors and nailing residents into their homes.

Arguably they should be, assuming the trend continues.

Indeed, although we never hear anything about it.

Leicester is the only place so far to come out of a local lockdown. Is it any wonder people are very suspicious !

Well, Scotland never seems to be out of lockdown as far as I can tell, and I didn't notice about Luton.
Luton was in and out of lockdown in a matter of days, and has significantly higher numbers now than when it was in lockdown. Just makes it look like even more of a political stitch up tbh

I'm not sure that Luton could be considered a political stitch up - just because Luton is in the south doesn't mean it has any love for the Tories. Contrast Bolton (which has a Conservative council and mostly Conservative MPs) to Luton which is dominated by Labour.

I have to say, I hadn't given this much thought. It just popped up on my Facebook memories today that it seems I had just recovered from "freshers flu" a decade ago - my final year of uni, so not a new phenomonon by any means. Maybe we do just need to give things time to settle down in the next couple of weeks and see how much the positive rate drops once all the students have got their initial "going away to uni" illnesses out of the way
