Looks like they've turned the power off it completely now. Unlike Thameslink who've blocked the coin slots of their machines but haven't turned them off

Neither of them work. They have both been broken for over a decade now. I highly doubt they will ever work.

The PERTIS at Holmwood has been electrically dead since late 2010.

The PERTIS at Warnham has had a coin jam since early 2012.

Until 2014 both of these stations had two PERTIS machines but the other two have been replaced with TVMs now.

GTR lost any interest in fixing their PERTIS machines in the late 2000s. They just let them all rot away with no interest in fixing faults. Out of the twenty or so on their network i think there may only be one that still works.

Does anyone know if the one at Salfords (Surrey) is still in working order?

Best to use an old 5/10/20p/50p (pre coat of arms version)?

The one at Salfords was working last time i went there. But that was a while ago so who knows now. Most of them are broken now so it would not surprise me if the one at Salfords is now too. But if you are in the area it is certainly worth checking.

You CAN use the following coins:

• the 5p coins issued in 2007 or earlier
• the 10p coins issued in 2007 or earlier
• any 20p coins
• any 50p coins
• the old round circular £1 coins
• any £2 coins

You can NOT use the following coins:

• any 1p coins
• any 2p coins
• the 5p coins issued in 2008 or later
• the 10p coins issued in 2008 or later
• the new twelve sided £1 coins

So yes make sure you have the right coins if you want to try it out.

Also even with the valid coins sometimes you have to try a couple of times before the machines accepts it.

It's usually on pay at ticket office. So I think the staff need to turn it on, except the ticket office is usually closed.

I'll throw some change at it tomorrow to see if it works, will report back.

To the tune of huge firework displays from the third rail, I was disappointed by the machine "Buy at ticket office". It must have meant the ticket machine. Was worth a try though! Fancied one for the collection. The machine is there mind you!

Yeah I thought it would be. The ticket office at Salfords is only open in the early mornings I think, so that's when they'd need to turn it on.

The one at Little Kimble was still working when i visited 29 November.
That's one of the few that are actually maintained, they even replaced the ink on that one not long ago.

Was down on coastway today so I thought I'd provide a small update.

Newhaven Harbour PERTIS still there but sadly with no power. The one on the Seaford-bound platform has been removed, as well as the one at Newhaven Town.

I also visited Ford, East Worthing and Portslade, all of which had 'not in use' light on. Southease still has both PERTIS in place, the one on Lewes-bound platform has no power, didn't see the status of the other one but it is there.

Many thanks. Yes it appears it was removed a few months ago in the autumn. It was still there in the summer about six months ago. From your photo it looks like they have installed a defibrillator where it used to be.

Is there a reason for the machine to be set to pay at office when the office is closed?

It is simply because the staff at the ticket office forget to switch the PATO light off when they close for the day. It is suppose to only be switched on when the ticket office is open but these days most staff forget and it is just left in PATO mode. I think because there are so few of them these days and because staff work at different ticket offices it is very easy for them to forget.

Wrabness has one on the Harwich Town to Manningtree line. However due to a ticket vending machine next to it.
The pertis machine is in active and doesn't work. However some one has wedged a 5 pence piece into the slot of where you pay the money for the ticket.
5p up for grabs if anyone can get it out.

Its on pay at ticket office! So much for that at Hatton station! Shame you had no luck with that one, it usually is on :|. If you're nearby again, as people have said above Lapworth is another quite reliable one.

Do any WMT (LNWR and WMR) stations still have PERTIS machines? If so are any still working? I remember they used to have a huge amount up until a couple of years ago. But lots have been removed recently so i am not sure if any are left.

I compiled a list of over 900 PERTIS machines showing the serial number when most machines were in use.
Adding those listed above shows that some machines moved around to replace faulty machines.

Many thanks for attaching that! That is an amazing list! That is a fantastic database with so much information. I have been keeping serial numbers too in more recent years but lots on your list i did not have so that is very helpful. Bishopstone was an annoying one though as the serial number plate had fallen off so i was never able to get the serial number from that one.

Yes i think they moved them around a lot to replace broken ones. In later years they probably had lots of spares as so many had been removed so it was easy to just use an old one from another station to replace a broken one. I remember this happened at Smethwick Rolfe Street about five years ago when their broken machine got replaced by another.

Also some of the doubles on your list are because the station previously had two machines. For example Aldrington and Fishersgate both had two PERTIS machines each until around the early 2010s when TVMs were installed and one was removed from each station. Holmwood and Warnham both previously had two each as well (but nearby Box Hill & Westhumble and Ockley only ever had one each) with one on each platform at these two stations. There are others like this as well. So for some of the doubles on your list this is the reason why.
