I'm travelling from Paddington to Gloucester this Thursday Feb 3rd around lunchtime and returning around lunchtime the following day (Friday Feb 4th).

On both occasions I'm hoping to travel on direct services but things may change.

Any ideas on what rolling stock I can expect please?

I'm hoping to travel on Advance First Class tickets :D

Thanks!

Direct services are all operated by HSTs. If you opt to change at Swindon it will be HST Paddington - Swindon and then a FGW local DMU from there.

All the direct Paddington-Gloucester-Cheltenham Spa services are HST operated. Inderect will be HST Padd-Swindon and a unit (with no 1st class) from there to Gloucester.

Thanks guys!

Some of the connections involve changes at Bristol Parkway and mention 1st class being available I thought.

Which unit types might I expect?

Also, the first part of my entire journey is from Bury St Edmunds to London (via Cambridge) and there's mention of 1st Class accomodation on this leg of the journey too.........I thought they were only Class 153 units, or has there been a change there (BSE to Cambridge)?

Thanks again!

That will be a Cl170 with a basic first class bit (6 seats IIRC) ;)

(I don't suppose you are the man who I met whilst on my way to Grt Yarmouth last year - during some delays etc you managed to get a train back to BSE from Stowmarket instead of the Norwich train and then ended up going via Ely & EMT to Norwich???)

Due to NXEA rearranging their fleet a bit, and stopping running diesels to Liverpool Street, Cambridge-Norwich became 3-car 170 and Cambridge-Ipswich is almost all 2-car 170, meaning that 1st class has become available (it was previously 153 with some 156 services)

If you change at Swindon on to a service to Gloucester you'll either get a SWT 158 with declassified First Class or a FGW 150. If you change at Bristol Parkway, you'll get a FGW unit, could be anything from a Class 150, 153 or 158.
