LONDON TERMINALS (NLC 1072) - Ticket validity

Recent ticket checks have highlighted that a significant number of passengers are arriving at London Overground stations on both the West London Line (Imperial Wharf to Shepherds Bush inclusive) and at Hoxton and Shoreditch High Street on the East London line with tickets issued to LONDON TERMINALS (NLC 1072)

Retail staff are reminded that these stations are NOT part of the 'London Terminals' group and such tickets are therefore NOT valid to these stations. Customers requiring these destinations should be issued with the appropriate 'point-to-point' ticket to the station required.

London Overground have advised that as from September passengers with LONDON TERMINALS tickets arriving at any LOROL station where their ticket is not valid will be subject to a Penalty Fare

Full details of LONDON TERMINALS ticket validity is shown in the 'London' section of The Manual.

Saw that myself.

I don't think the issue is confined to London Terminals. The amount of "Liverpool Stns" tickets that try and go all over the Merseyrail network is pretty high. The customer always points and says, "see, all Liverpool Stns".
...met by, "that will be £20 sir".

Another favourite is a ticket to Liverpool Stns routed VT Only. "But I want to go to Moorfields...", erm well you'll be waiting rather a long time before the next VT train takes you there!

I think the "stns" term needs revising. Any ideas?

Advance tickets with no further validity should at least be routed to an actual station, e.g. London Terminals-Liverpool Stns Advance VT Only should become London Euston to Liverpool L St.

We have similar issues with individuals holding tickets to 'London Terminals' thinking they can then use LU services to cross town. This is a particular issue with people coming from the North into Kings Cross as 'London Terminals' tickets into Kings Cross are valid on LU from Kings Cross St Pancras to Old Street and Moorgate and therefore work the barriers.

With regards to tickets to 'Anytown Stations.' I suppose it depends on the actual location in question and in many PTE areas the Any Permitted fares are the same to local stations as the main station in the area (eg. Hall Green to London is the same price as Birmingham Stns to London and Hall Road[1] to London is the same price as Liverpool Stns to London). In such locations I would expect the ticket to be excessed for no cost, or the passenger to be allowed to travel with no excess payable (see the University/Selly Oak to Birmingham Intl. Penalty Fare issue which occurred here in the past).

Obviously this is not always the case, particularly for shorter distance journeys (eg. Redditch to Hall Green costs more than to Birmingham Stns) so it would depend on the correct fare payable.

[1]I honestly didn't pick this station because it was similar to Hall Green. I loaded the Merseyrail map and it was the first station I came to

I agree with this. I often do a double take with my own Advances where the origin / destination on the reservation are different to the ticket, for example the ticket shows 'Liverpool Stns' to 'London Terminals' but the reservation shows 'Liverpool L St' to 'London Euston.'

Note that the following is not based on any sort of technical knowledge, and is only my inclination playing around with Avantix Traveller, so the usual e&oe, but I suspect the issues may be due to auto-correct on various ticket issuing systems. For example it seems to be the case that the location will not auto correct if a fare exists for that flow.

Example:
if I type in EUS to BHM, it will auto correct to London Terminals to Birmingham Stns.

However, if I type in STP to BDM it will only auto correct at London Terminals, as EMT have entered Advance and Off-peak EMT Only journeys into the system for that flow. This may confuse ticket sellers and pieces of software who are used to selecting a location and having it auto correct, particularly for locations such as Bedford where many are probably not aware that Bedford Stations exists or even that Bedford has two stations!

However, I suppose one could buy a Kensington (Olympia) - London Terminals ticket and break at Shepherd's Bush or Imperial Wharf (£2.60 instead of £4.00 if no Oyster!)

Given that Southern run direct to the West London Line from here, I've brought this article to management's attention. I think all clerks here know what to advise. Although I think there's still a lingering myth among passengers that Kensington Olympia counts as a London Terminal

It used to!

Also, I hope the staff on this line are aware that a few tickets to "London Terminals" are valid (and allow break of journey), such as the aforementioned Kensington Olympia ticket.
