Now I hope this won't be too difficult but travelling on a Saturday, what options do I have to use split tickets on both the outbound and return leg of my journey?

I know I could easily get a direct train BUT I'm interested to know what options I have if I split my journey especially as I have no idea what routes I could use - need to arrive about 11am if possible. Can I go via BHM and split my trip there etc...

Look forward to your suggestions.

Are you using PRIV?

If so,

Heart of England 3-in-7 Rover
£18.50 PRIV

London Terminals - Milton Keynes Central
Route Virgin Trnsonly
Anytime Day Return
£7.25 PRIV

Milton Keynes Central - Rugby
Route Any Permitted
Anytime Day Return
£3.80 PRIV

Crewe - Wigan Stations
Route Any Permitted
Anytime Day Return
£3.85 PRIV

Wigan Stations - Lancaster
Route Any Permitted
Anytime Day Return
£4.00 PRIV

Total: £37.40 without the need for the train to stop anywhere whether it goes down the Trent Valley or Birmingham. This compares with £83.00 that Virgin wants you to pay.

Are you looking for flexible tickets or are you happy to commit to advance ones?

Wow, you are good - I asked both Virgin Trains and National Rail Enquires this and they were unable to help me and yes I would prefer to use priv where possible.

I will be returning the same day though - one question though can I use that combo of tickets on the direct London to Lancaster services without having to get off at any of these stations?

What's the Heart of England 3-in-7 Rover £18.50 PRIV for though?

It's to satisfy Condition 19c:

19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire journey and one of the following applies:
(a) they are both Zonal Tickets unless special conditions prohibit their use in this way. The Ticket Seller will, if you ask, advise you whether you can use a Zonal Ticket in combination with another ticket.
(b) the train you are in calls at a station where you change from one ticket to another; or
(c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/ are not.

Yes, you can travel on any direct train between London Euston and Lancaster (amongst others) without the need for the train to call at or for you to get off at any of the stations you have split your ticket at.

As telstarbox has pointed out, it is to satisfy Condition 19(c) which he has quoted. The Heart of England Rover satisfies the definition of a leisure travel pass. Condition 19(c) allows you to use any service without the need for the train to call at your split points.

The definition of a leisure travel pass is listed under Condition 19(c) in the NRCoC:

NRCoC 19 Extract said:
For the purposes of this Condition, a “leisure travel pass” means any multi-journey ticket (excluding Season Tickets) valid for:
(i) at least 7 consecutive days; or
(ii) at least 3 days in a period of at least 7 consecutive days
and includes rover tickets, travel passes, flexipass tickets and BritRail passes.
