How does the physical distancing work? For example, I guess there is just one person per table?

*Edit* I'm looking at seats for the 13th of August but some rows have one seat greyed out.

Does this mean that the greyed out seat is occupied, or does it mean it's un-bookable?

I really want to make this journey but I'm seriously considering not bothering.

I believe with tables, people are being booked at diagonals i.e. one person at the window, the other person facing at the aisle. In my experience, it doesn't work well as if the aisle seat person gets there first, they tend to sit at the window. I certainly don't want to face someone on a long journey, even with face coverings!

You're best off booking an 'airline' seat, where you won't have someone reserved next to you.

Yeah , airline for me , dont like sitting opposite stranger, i some dont mind.

When i was on LNER last week , guy was on his own with whole of table to himself. Before Edinburgh he moved to table opposite and was joined by someone at his table. I think he moved to be in his reserved seat! But i was surprised he didnt move when the stranger appeared. I would have.

The reservation displays were not on , maybe to discourage people moving?

Just looked at the "Timetable" page on the LNER Website.
It doesn't show anything beyond yesterday. The only option for planning is to look up specific journeys as if buying the ticket now.
A contribution to discouraging non-essential travel perhaps?

Same with Scotrail , just a journey planner. They did publish timetable in early lockdown. Hope this journey planner approach is not to stay , as its harder now planning.

Even for me trying to book for mid september there hasn't been an update on timetables (3rd Sept as far), yet nothing has been published, last timetable update was up to last week - just seems odd, I am sure (and can't remember where) but there was an increase in service even as far as Inverness?

I did have an email in relation to Scotrail and they explained they were implementing a 1m rule (thats a new one since all I have heard where I am in 2m rule in nearly everything, is LNER still 2m?) https://www.lner.co.uk/globalassets/azuma/lner-temporary-weekend-timetable-25-to-26-july-2020.pdf

The current timetables are running as far as some date in September, at which point I believe TOCs are increasing service
provision then.

The date in particular for me is 14th September but I was expecting it to have been updated before the weekend but at a guess it should/could be this week hopefully!

A quick glance at Leeds on RTT looks like the normal service provision, but I'm guessing there's still some final tweaks to be done and advances are soon to be released as you say.

It might be worth tweeting them to see if they have a date for it. I personally wouldn't rely on app or website to give me a notification of advances being released.

It just seems (I know the situation is ever changing) but it just seems strange playing the waiting game, I sign up to their notifications too (most of the time I actually book it as the email comes out a day or 2 later  )

I will give LNER a bit of credit when I have emailed them they have replied might look into it if nothing happens yet...

just did a quick twitter search seems someone has asked the very question - they hope it will be up soon

EDIT: Seems like I may just go to Glasgow instead as strangely Scotrail have had tickets available for that date already (what is going on?), not at LNER in general but this whole scenario has created a mess! (no matter the way you look at it), further edit... Glasgow it now is no longer Newcastle :( ... I wouldn't be at all surprised that the tickets will be alot more expensive than what they should be (I am sure this happened in June when I was initally going to book down but the fares shot right up), just to add though whoever is creating these timetables need to move alot quicker with them than just hang about to the last minute (just to add I see the sevices for Inverness/Aberdeen are now fully re-instated)

The Highland Chieftain 1W96, did work to Inverness for the first time since lockdown last night.
It could be that LNER are near to a normal timetable. Also, additional early morning / late evening services from ScotRail on the Highland Main Line from today.

Does this mean that the greyed out seat is occupied, or does it mean it's un-bookable?
I don't know about the LNER site as I book with Trainsplit, which shows the seats that are bookable, and the ones that are already reserved are shown as such.

Seating plans are based on approx 1m social distancing, with every row in use, and it not being possible to reserve two adjacent seats. At tables, two people can be reserved diagonally opposite each other. If you do not wish to be diagonally opposite someone, book an 'airline' seat.

Most LNER trains are lightly loaded at present, though there are some exceptions. If you can say what the journey is, people may be able to assist further.

.... they explained they were implementing a 1m rule (thats a new one since all I have heard where I am in 2m rule in nearly everything, is LNER still 2m?) ...
Guidance (not rules) are 2m distancing if possible but this of course won't always be possible (and is not practicable on trains except when it is very quiet) and 1m if that is not possible; however in recognition that even 1m is not always possible on public transport, face coverings are mandated.

Each company has its own interpretation of this, but LNER has every other seat reserveable, with reservations compulsory, so you won't normally be sat immediately next to anyone.
