On Saturday I purchased an off peak return from Shipley to Manchester. Upon getting on the Manchester train at Leeds I realised I had somehow lost my outward Shipley to Manchester portion in Leeds somewhere, probably the Pumpkin Cafe as I certainly used it to exit and re-enter the ticket gates at Leeds.

The conductor on the Manchester train kindly let me travel without the outward portion after showing them the return portion and explaining, then I remembered it was Manchester Victoria I was alighting who now have ticket gates.

Luckily the gate line assistant at Victoria also kindly let me through after explaining so everyone seemed to be in a common sense mood today  (The fact my return portion said printed at 10:40 and I was in Manchester for 12:30 helped!)

What is the official guideline for losing an outward of a 2 part return? I would assume the purchase of a new single ticket so about 10p cheaper than buying another return ;)

Well strictly speaking you were not able to produce a valid ticket on demand so would be treated as traveling without a valid ticket. That said, you could argue that the guard on the Manchester train gave you permission to travel.

I was awaiting the part where you were then stopped by an RPI and reported, but it never came so that's a result :)

You didn't have a valid ticket to show, so would have committed an offence. However, you were given permission to travel on the part of the ticket you did have, so no offence ended up being committed. Having said that, it's all about being able to prove who said what, which is easier said than done sometimes!

The reason for this being an offence is simply because you only had the return part of the ticket, and although to most honest people this would have been a genuine mistake, there's a few who may have given the other part to a friend to use or similar.

The official position would be that you didn't have a valid ticket so would need to buy one, or potentially face prosecution.

That said, it's happened to me twice in the last few years and both times the guard let me travel.

The situation is, as you may know, different if you were to lose the return portion of a return ticket, as the outbound portion is only valid if you have both (for reasons of reducing ticket fraud).

Common sense all round , it does happen, although a regular trick was someone to split their tickets with a friend and claim to have lost the out or return part. It was always nice to move a seat or 2 up and see someone with the other half of the ticket and then reunite the 2 parts and a full fare ticket for the now ticketless passenger.

Thanks for the clarification - it's actually quite rare for me to lose tickets as I have a clear phone case so usually store them 'inside' the back of my phone!

Tickets can be scanned on a guards ticket machine and information about when the ticket was brought can be seen by the guard so they can tell if you're lying if they wanted to check.

Or they could just read the date and time of issue printed on the ticket itself!
