As usual there'll be the back story, a trip to Blackpool, thrown in too, part rail related, then the main agenda, along with a few photo's from the mobile thrown into the mix too, so please bear with me. Go make a cuppa and grab a pack of your fave biscuits before reading on.

Not long after returning from my jaunt doing the Roundabout ticket up in Glasgow, maybe even before, I seriously can't remember, GBRf announced they were doing the 4 day tour, my first thought was I'll have a bit of that, I fancied 2 of the 4 days, however that was scuppered with work and obligations to my daughter, my daughter obviously supersedes any Rail Tour, however I could manage 1 day of the tour, which day depended on what traction was in use.

I eagerly awaited the traction line up and I have to admit, when GB announced the line ups, they were all rather tempting, especially day 3 and 4. To keep a long story shorter, I went for day 3, a chance to be hauled by a 47 again on the main line was just too hard to turn down. Its been well over a decade since my last 47 on mainline rails, on the XC Bristol-Newcastle-Brum turn and well over 2 decades since I had choppers for haulage on the Tyne Tees Scarborough Express. Needless to say, when booking opened, I booked and was all giddy, when the confirmation email came through.

I also now had the hassle of finding digs in Edinburgh, I knew that wouldn't be cheap but managed to find a B n B in Newington for a reasonable £84 for 2 nights, even better it had a pay later option, which worked out fine because I was off to Blackpool with my daughter for a few days and that money was earmarked for then.

The time in Blackpool was for a bit quality time with my daughter, shes now tall enough to ride rollercoasters and I'd made a pinky promise to her, as soon as she was tall enough, I'd take her to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. I also made it a bit rail related for myself, plus I really didn't wanna be stuck on a coach for hours on end either.

To keep the story shorter, it was a dud 91109 to York, a brisk walk over the bridge, straight onto winner 185131 for the ride to Man Picc, for double winners 156488 and 156425 to Blackpool North. We had a cracking time in Blackpool and I found out my daughters too brave for her own good, hands in the air on the Big One, whilst I was clinging onto the bar for grim death. I managed to score 15 trams for sight, a mixture of new and vintage ones, whilst sampling 005 and 009 for haulage. On the way back, I'd planned to come back via the WCML, with an hour or so at Preston. Winner 158755 took us from Blackpool to Preston, where after buying some cold drinks and a few snacks for the remainder of our journey home, I settled for a bit spotting, whilst the daughter played games on my phone. A very profitable hour it was too, 142045, 142046, 319378 and 66422, were clicked for sight and the crowning glory, my last required Trans Pennine 350, needed for haulage was our steed to Carlisle. 350403 completing the set, much to my delight.

Arriving in Carlisle, it was awash with 37's, 37688 on a test train, 37611, parked over on the back wall, whilst 37409 was waiting in the station and promptly replaced the arrived 37403 on the Cumbrian Coast turn. Even 66421 with 68006 arrived in on a ballast train, I presume headed for Gresty before winner 156503 rolled in to take us over the Tyne Valley and home. Not bad for half an hour.

Fast forward a few weeks and with a few weeks to the tour, a chance look at the Railtours and Preservation thread, had my eyes as wide as saucers, GBRf no longer had the 47's on their roster of loco's, in a fit of panic, I sent an email to the tour organisers, telling them the 47 was the main draw for me, where they still using the 47? within a day, they'd replied, saying, they'd hope to be using a Colas 47, I was delighted. A few days later on twitter someone posted a pic of a freshly painted 47749, alongside a few of equally immaculate Grids of theirs. I was convinced, 47749 was the chosen one for the Tour. I was also hoping GB liveried 20901 and 905, would be our steeds to Inverness, 20901 is required for sight too. Alas, I found out a week before, they wouldn't be on it but still no word of confirmation regarding the 47. The week leading up, I was looking for movements on RTT, to see when the 20's and 47 would do a positioning move to Craigentinny, on the Thursday before I was sent a tweet of times for the tour, which contained 2x 20's top n tailed by 66/7 but was also told 47739 was stabled in Donny. Inside I was screaming if I get a shed, I'll be sick as a chip.

After fleeing round like a lunatic, getting everything ready for the Friday, dropping the bairn off at school in the morning and racing over to Central for the 09.46, making it with 10mins to spare, There was very little of interest to report, even less so when dud 91114, plus equally dud for sight, coaching stock, rolled in to take me on the journey to the Scottish Capital. Heaton came and went with only Grand Central's gronk 08648 on show, a lone UID Colas 60 was on Oxwellmains but at Craigentinny, it was shed fest, 66743, 746, 737 and 739, 66737 was shunting the Royal Scotsman stock, also on show was resident EC shunter 08472 but a stranger was with it, 08596 became the 1st cop of the trip. Obviously pleased with the bonus Gronk, the amount of sheds on Craigentinny seemed to realise my worst fears about the tour the day after. Arrival was bang on into Waverley and after doing a quick sweep of the station, to see what was floating round, I went and got my Anytime return to Dunfermline Town for the evening's entertainment, walked off the station, up the ramp, had a ciggy, noted a few trams for sight, then jumped in a taxi to my B n B.

To say the taxi driver was a complete and utter knob, was understating the fact, after cutting someone up at the lights, a burly bloke came and brayed on his window, he just told him to shut up and wound his window up, then took his hassle out on me, when he shouted to me, I TOLD HIM, Newington Road. I said, I don't think so, I told you, Mayfield Road in Newington and it's not my fault your having a ****ty day, so please, don't take it out on me and just take me to the Mayfield Lodge on Mayfield Road please. He screwed his tip and I managed to bundle enough crappy change together to pay the exact fare and slammed the door without a cheers mate, kiss my arse or nothing.

I checked into the B n B, made my to the room, had a coffee and made for the bus back to Waverley. I was gonna do a CSR but engineering work put me off, so I decided I'd do the fife turn on that evening, retire back to the B n B earlier and get a good nights kip for the early rise for the rail tour next day. The Sunday I was going to play tourist in Edinburgh, calling in at Haymarket and Waverley at various points through the day, where hopefully my wanderings would get a few more of the trams underlined to boot. I made my way out and the ten minute stroll to find a bus stop to take me to Princess Street.

By around 2pm, I'd got off the number 37 bus, a double decker of some sort and was stood at the top of Platform 19, watching various units coming and going, clicking a couple of IS(Inverness not the radicals) 158's, 1 of HA's out the 5, I required for sight, a few 170's and more than a few 334's. I got talking to a fella from the Midlands, who was on a coach trip round Scotland, going to various stations and yards in Scotland. He too was going on the Fife turn, taking the first one to Haymarket before bailing the 2nd one at South Gyle, where their coach was parked up. Those few hours whizzed by before it was time to meander down to Platform 2 for the 17.08. It was an absolute crank fest, obviously those up for the tour had the same idea. I'm not kidding when I say the say the 1st coach was rammed with cranks and no wonder when this Beast was on it

all round winner 68023 took me through the tunnels for a bit Cat thrash to Haymarket, where I bailed and waited for the 17.20 to arrive. About 8 down dud 68007, rolled into Haymarket and thrashed it's way and me up to Dunfermline Town. Quickly bailing, I darted through the underpass and awaited the unit down to Inverkeithing, 30 seconds later, in rolled winner 170474, so I climbed aboard and I was out of Dunfermline quicker than a greased weasel on a pipe.

The 40mins fester passed relatively quickly, I was going to go in the waiting room but some form of God Squad, sporting Sky Blue jackets and caps adorning Railway Patron's, had took over the place and were having a bit of a jamboree, singing hymns. I stayed well clear, fearing that if I stepped in there, him above would send a lightening bolt, as a warning to stay clear of Gods work. Many others remained outside too. All too soon 68023 reappeared and the front coach was still wedged with cranks, obviously the cranks had just took a trip round the Fife Circle with it.

Extending my miles behind 68023 was an absolute joy but all too soon we were back in Waverley. Where after another quick sweep of the Station, I left the station and stood on Princess Street, watching the trams go by and look for my bus back to Newington, via McDonalds for a coffee and a burger ofcourse. Not bad for a 1st day of the trip, 29 cops in the book and 2 new winners for haulage. Needless to say, I slept quite well that night.

A huge score on 350403 - congrats! That taxi driver sounds like an absolute so and so too. I'm looking forward to the rest and I like the new avatar.

Great stuff.
Congratulations on clearing the 350/4s.
A winning 68 is never a bad thing, either.

One thing,

I was out of Dunfermline quicker than a greased weasel on a pipe.

is a brilliant line :)

I love the expression too, I might have to adopt it somewhere in my own trip reports!

Some fantastic reading there squire. The taxi driver was, to put it politely, a muppet! I am beyond jealous of 68023 and the racket!

I see the locals aren't quite your cup of tea. I promise we aren't all like that in the Auld Reekie! 023 is still needed over here as well, but it is semi-regular on the Fife turns so shouldn't be too difficult. Just need to keep an eye on the Scot-rail gen lists.

Day 2 - #LSGsReaquainted

I'm woke at 5.45 by my alarm, I'm up and wide awake, after a cracking nights kip. I quickly flick the kettle on and go do the human nature thing, after a shower and dressed, I fill a cup of coffee and head downstairs for a ciggy. Its a nice fresh morning but not cold at all. I'm thinking to myself, I intend to enjoy every moment of this day, even though its gonna be one helluva long day. I traipse back upstairs and fill my bag up, brush my teeth and I'm off at 06.35 for the 10min walk to the bus stop. I'm only at the bus stop a few minutes before the No.31 arrives just before 06.50.

On the journey to Princess Street, theres one thing nagging me, the 47, it better produce, unless I won't be a happy bunny. I'm also wondering, what 86 worked the previous nights overnight leg of the tour to Edinburgh? It sounds silly but as I got off the bus, the closer I got to Waverley Station, the more my nerves jangled. I called into McDonalds and got a coffee, crossed the road and walked down the ramp. I stopped to have a ciggy, then I heard the unmistakable rolling of a 47 engine. Get in, it's here, thank the lord, I told myself, I finished my ciggy and fairly trotted down the ramp to be met by this MONSTEROUS BEAST!!!!

I'd heard from those on the platform, as I squeezed in to get a pic 47739, that Wetherspoon's had been besieged by breakfast requests from those who'd been on the overnight leg of the tour, after about 10mins, 47739 was revved and thrashed out of Waverley with the stock towards Craigentinny, where the 20's would be attached, as it left, I had a lump like a golf ball in my throat. Thiss I was gonna get for haulage, plus the 20's, I'd had a mega wait for something like this, oh yes LSG was Reaquainted alright.

As I do, I made a quick sweep of the station, clicking 158870 for sight in doing so, I'd already seen the 47 but seeing these ole sparky's made me smile

86401 had arrived through the night, on GBRf's 15 overnight sojourn and 87002 was for the last days leg, from Edinburgh to Liverpool Lime St and had it been possible, to get the time off, would've been my ride tomorrow morning. Nevermind. Having finished perusing the platforms, I was going towards the ramp for a ciggy, when I bumped into a lad I'd never seen for ages, there we're a few of us, who used to veg out at Newcastle Central, the odd afternoon and Evenings. Was good to catch up, I'd just got back into the hobby and them lads, were a great help at the time, sharing gen, especially when the refurbed HST's were coming back from Loughborough. After a quick smoke, we made our way over to Platform 20 for the impending 08.15 departure. However we waited a full 32mins after 08.15 before the sight of 20096 and 20107 rolled up the platform

I was in coach K, which was the very front coach behind the 20's, like hell if I could get near the droplight window but the windows were open and on departure, the driver pulled back the power handle and we fairly thrashed our way out of Waverley, so much so, you could feel the vibration in your seat, I kid you not too. In the tunnels the thrash from the choppers, sounded awesome and it took me back to the day when I was on the aforementioned Tyne Tees Scarborough Express, departing the cavernous Snow Hill on Wear(Sunderland to anyone else)when 20122 and 20137(I think, it was them two- anyway) made a similar departure there.

I sat back and relaxed enjoying hearing the 20's working their socks off and before I knew it we were in Dundee, where we told to stay on board despite stopping, as we were trying to make up time, which by the time we hit Dundee had gone from 32 down, to just 15. After departing Dundee we took a left and went up a single line, the 20's were being worked hard here, we were warned not to stick our heads out the window, just as well really but with the lineside trees, bushes and branches, lashing both sides of the coaches as we thrashed along, I don't think anyone would be that daft anyway.

As we approached Aberdeen, we were greeted by Colas liveried 60056 on a cement train, where I heard, that used to run a few times a week, now its down to once a week,. I thought to myself, well I'm glad to hear, it's not just the North East of England where freight traffic's dying on its arse. Over on the stabling point was 2nd cop of the day 73966 , with 66719 and a rake of sleeper stock. I also heard the strangest comment I'd heard all day, woooaaah 66719, What a beast!!!! each to their own I suppose but a ying referred to as a beast, 73966, I could understand. We were given 10mins to stretch our legs at Aberdeen, photo stop, leg stretch and more than a few sly fags were lit, I'm no angel, I joined in too. Strike me down if you want.

A crew change and a driver, who seemed quite well known, among some of those on board. We all got back on and after getting the right of way, our driver went nuts on the power handle, what a noise, everyone's face screwed up, like we'd all gone past the vinegar strokes at the same time, within seconds, we screeched to a sudden halt in proceedings, the train, not the passengers, met with a loud ironic, cheer in our coach, as the brakes went on hard, wether the driver had over egged it or we'd left someone behind, I'm not really sure, though I suspect the former. Needless to say, the driver was a bit more sedate when we got moving again.

We ventured on into the highlands, this was new territory on a train for me, I'd been up here on a coach in the late 80's to visit Inverness depot but definitely, new line for me, another reason I'd booked. My mates and I had been as far as Arrochar on the 37/4s many moons back. The scenery is obviously quite stunning. We were making good time, as just south of Elgin, we were actually 20mins up. As a result, we got looped to let a 170 go South, allowing a couple of guys with camera's on a nearby bridge to get as many shots of 20096/107 as they liked. The 170 passed and off we went again, noting that there's some seriously nice houses in Elgin, bet there's not much change, if any out of 250k. A bit further up the line we were passing, what I assume is Inverness Airport, there was a plane getting ready to take off at the end of the runway, folk shouting, go on, pull the handle back, then as it started to roll, there was a long woooooooooooaaaahh as it hurtled along and a big cheer when it got in the air. You had to be there but at the time it was quite funny.

At 14.55 we were pulling into Inverness, where we're told, back on by 16.00, in the sidings is a pair of UID DRS 37's, 37688, 66304 and just pulling out the station is cop 73968with 66738, shunting the sleeper stock, there's also a few units in there, well 2 170's and a 158, nowt required though. I get a quick pic of 20096 and go in search of food off the Station.

Many thanks lads for the kind comments, yeah it was nice striking 350403 out the park. Alex I love Auld reeky, just that taxi driver was a total dick. He deserved a slap for cutting that bloke up at the lights, if truth be told. Sure 68023s going to be replaced by 006, so be quick squire. Glad you like the Avatar Quinn, I do too.

68023 was listed as being "under Genius control" on the list I saw dated this morning, alongside 68007, so I'm hopeful! Free evening on Monday so we shall see what happens. It may end up being winner 200 for 2016!

The tour on day 2 sounds absolutely hellfire, glad you're enjoying yourself, and that your 47 produced. :)

Another splendid read squire, I wish I could have been there for the thrash. Sounds like it was a monster of a day, if rumours are true of a similar tour next year I want on it this time!

Looks like a very enjoyable tour.
I love the shot of 86401, it's good to see the old girl still earning her keep (ditto 87002).

That was a good report on the GBRf 15 tour. I was on it and the 20s did sound awesome! I managed to be one of the first into Spoons off the night leg of the journey and got my breakfast fine but the kitchen was overwhelmed by all accounts and then something broke and it all went a bit Pete Tong!

The wait for the stock off Craigentinney was down to the depot (apparently been like it all week according to the guard who ended sitting at my table once his stint of the journey was done).

Won't comment on any more just yet. If I get time (and don't forget any of the detail) I may even dig my trip report thread out when I finally get home!

Just caught up on parts 1 and 2 and you had me on the edge of my seat as to whether you would get the 47. At one point I wanted to just scroll down to find out and not read the rest of the report. I like the photos of the 87 and 86 as they look resplendant, it is good to see that these old dears still have some life left in them.

Many thanks folks, glad you liked the pics of the sparky's, they were taken on my mobile, I was quite fond of the pic 86401 myself. Its only took about 25yrs to actually take a decent photo.
Andy I thought my avatar would've been the giveaway regarding 47739 on the tour.

LSGsReaquainted - Part 3

So with an hour to kill, I set off in search of some grub and a supply raid, I had a quick ciggy on the way and found a shop, got two chicken and bacon sarnies, before popping into Poundland, where I got two 6 packs of crisps, a toblerone, a 3 pack of Mars Bars and 6 cans of Irn Bru, for the staggering total of 2p less than a tenner, however, all this healthy eating will be the death of me.

Back at the Station, I walked to the top of the platform to have a good look at 47739. Unfortunately she was a good half coach length off the platform, so no chance of seeing if I could get a look in the cab. It's been a while since I had a butchers in one.

Still I walked down the platform to the very back coach, where I was seated, talk about being as far away as possible from the 47, I'd be less likely to hear any thrash but I was still overjoyed, that I was still getting a 47 for haulage. Bang on 16.00 we got the off, I'd love to say, I was at the drop light as 47739 left Inverness in a plume of clag and absolute thrash but I'd be lying through my teeth if I did, I know the 20's directly behind us, were gurgling well, directly behind our coach.

I sat talking to the 3 gents I was in company with, the guy nearest me, wasn't a crank, he was watching some fellow cranks, marking in the track in there Bakers or Quails, so he was saying, I thought it was just about collecting numbers, so his friend and I were trying to educate him on what this hobby entails. I was of the opinion, that spotting loco's, units,(of which I included light rail and LU within) and coaching stock, plus haulages, were my thing but there's other folk, who also just go for loco's or units for haulage but there's others, who are after track, like them lads are marking in, plus visiting all the stations too, he was actually shocked that people would want to visit every station, even more so when, his other friend added, some folk also, go for the numbers on the wagons, what freight trains haul. He said there must be bloody millions of them. We also had to answer the question, well, what happens when you get the lot? His friend took over and said, that's hardly likely because they're always bringing out new trains, plus there's various other systems, like the London Underground and Metro and various Tram systems to chase after too. To be fair, the lad was more intrigued than dismissive. Ok it doesn't sound like the most intriguing conversation but the guy was shocked to hear, just how many facets of the hobby there actually is.

Anyway we ploughed on down the very picturesque West Highland line, over the infamous Glenfinnan Viaduct before a brief 10 minute stop at Kingussie, where we're told, to beware of the drop to the platform, I was aware but still didn't stop me nigh on breaking my neck, jumping from the door of the coach, I bailed and went through the fence, had a ciggy and took a photo of 20107 with the step evident, whilst others scrambled across to the other platform to get better shots, than I of the 20's. Below is certainly a case of, Mind The Gap.

If I thought getting off at Kingussie was bad enough, getting back on without said step, was nearly as challenging, having to grab the hand rails and stretch my legs about a foot up to the coach door step and yark myself up. I took my seat and settled down for the journey to Perth, where we'd get a 40 minute break. The time was passed by talking where we 4 sitting together were from, with the older guy recalling a trip to Australia and a trip on the XTP, one of his friends had obviously heard the story, more than a few times and was staring blankly out the window, thankfully the story stopped as we went through Aviemore Station and a brief sighting of a rather faded green liveried 27, least that's what I thought it was, I just didn't get enough time to get a good look to see the loco, nevermind the number, it was there and gone in seconds.

Our friend now changed the subject from Australia to his model railway society, layout, motorised points and signals. I was now lost in a sea of ignorance but it took me back to the days, when I got a Hornby train set as a surprise Christmas Present as a kid. My Dad and stepmother, thought I love railways, so I'd love a train set. I did for about 2mins after tearing the wrapping paper off, then I realised it was the Flying Scotsman set. It was ok, but after going round a big loop for about 20mins, I got bored and put it away. I like them big layouts you see at Exhibitions, I love looking at them and the work that goes into them is a true labour of love but as the actress said to the woman in Anne Summers, I just prefer the real thing.

Eventually we're told we'll be arriving in Perth, where we have 40mins to stretch our legs and wait for our path, just about everyone bales off and heads towards the 47, by the time I make my way down from the back coach, 47739 is basically surrounded, so I get this photo,

and make my way off the station with a few others for a ciggy, whilst some go hunting for food or the nearest pub/off licence to refuel or stock up. The 40mins flies but I jump aboard a few coaches up from the one I'm in and find a free window, to hopefully get an earful of 47739 leaving Perth, after the unmistakable sound of the horn, the driver pulls back the handle and a just audible(from where I'm at) bit of brush thrash is heard and a few seconds later, the sweet music is stopped as we brake and come to a stand still, much to my annoyance, why I'm not sure, as we get moving again, the momentum seems lost, as its a more sedate departure but at least I got so hear its subtle tones, albeit very briefly. I wander off and buy a coffee from the buffet car and amble back to my seat, for the rest of the journey. I did however find this video, which sort of meant I could relive that moment again.

https://youtu.be/YKaJLyaKa0Y

We 're now on our way to Shields Junction via Gleneagles Stirling etc, passing Eastfield, not that we can see a thing its pitch dark, we go over the River Clyde, over a bridge that I'm reliably told, isn't used very much by passenger trains, and not long after, we pull into a siding on Shields Junction, where 47739 takes a break and the 20's take control again and off we went back to Edinburgh via the Bathgate lines, I looked over to the table opposite and the lads on there were working out which lines we'd reversed on at Shields Junction, wether they'd sussed it out or not I'm not sure. All too soon we were passing Edinburgh Park and into Haymarket, enjoying a last bit of chopper thrash as we went through the tunnels and into Waverley just 15 down, not bad for a Railtour but not great when your bus is due in 7 minutes, meaning I left without seeing the loco's off or getting the coaching stock, so if anyone has it, please can you share it with me.

I caught the bus no problem and clicked tram 274 for sight too, which meant I'd had 2 winning loco's for haulage, one of those being my fave machines and 4 cops for sight over the day, so I was more than happy with myself. I was back in the digs, shortly before midnight, where I made for the shower, made a cuppa had a packet of crisps and a mars bar, before having a wander downstairs and a quick ciggy, before retiring to bed and a well earned kip. It was one helluva long but very enjoyable day, the 20's stole the show, if I'm truly honest but being in the coach directly behind them for the whole journey, meant we got to hear them constantly, not that it was a bad experience at all.

The aim of this trip, was to get hauled by a 47 again, so it was mission accomplished. Whilst having that ciggy I thought to myself, I sincerely hope its not too long before I get a 47 in again and just how well GBRf had ran the tour. Before I hit the sack, I couldn't believe how stupid I was not getting the stock, especially with ample opportunities to do it. However I hit the hay and was out till 8am.

Sounds like one heck of a great day, even if 739 didn't perform as well as you wanted it to.

It's a magical 47 being able to shift from the Highland Main Line (Inverness to Perth) to the West Highland Line to go over the Glenfinnan Viaduct before returning back to the Highland Main Line in time for a stop at Kingussie ;)

I guess those lads trying to track the lines travelled to Shields Junction had a hard job with it being dark.

Sounded like a good day with your mission to get a 47 for haulage again completed :)

Oh yes. That's why they seemed to be everywhere. There was only 52 of them really ;).

Must be the replacement for the Hogwarts Express when the kettle breaks down

The Highland Main Line is a beautiful line as it goes through some wild wilderness

They do indeed LSG! 739 sure had me under its spell on 17th April, hard to believe that was over 5 months ago now. Mind you, if the 20s had been performing I daresay I'd have scooped the 47 and that would have been it  Instead I spent most of my day racking up 47 mileage!

Another excellent read, and that step down at Kingussie is ridiculously annoying. Had that experience with 40145 in 2007, which reminds me that you really ought to be more than grateful you had 20s next to your coach all day. On that 2007 tour, I had the mispleasure of 57601 yinging away all day and all ****in' night too. You don't realise how much you hate 57s and their yinging until you're under the overall roof at Perth at around midnight, when you're super tired, and all you can hear is the infernal thing making a racket!

As for marking in the track and keeping track of it, if you're a seasoned pro it's not super challenging. It gets difficult following progress through the maze of lines on the final approaches to London Euston, admittedly, but most of the time it's easy enough to do even in the dark!

KThanks for the kind words folks, much appreciated.

Quinn ,47739 probably performed admirably and had I not been in the very last coach, no doubt I'd have enjoyed it's thrash too.

LSGs Eeaquainted
Day 3

Having been up mega early all week, I was gonna have a lie in of sorts, anything after 06.00 would be a blessed relief. As it happens, I had a great nights kip and was awake about 8, I done the ablutions, then went downstairs and ordered my breakfast. I walloped down a bowl of cornflakes and a couple of glasses of apple juice before my full Scottish arrived, I was expecting similar to a full English but with my sausages sporting a kilt and tartan beans or it to be brought to the table, led by a piper, playing The Flower of Scotland but no, just our friends over the border being pedantic. It was however fantastic fare and got totally devoured , along with 2 rounds of toast and 2 pots of coffee. Suitably stuffed, I went outside for a ciggy and enjoyed the early morning sunshine and contemplated todays meanderings before returning to my room, to gather my belongings, double checking I'd got everything and just before 10, I said my goodbyes and set off towards the bus stop bound for Waverley.

Shortly before 11 I arrived on the platforms at Waverley, musing to myself over yesterdays shenanigans, arriving to the sweet Brush sounds of 47739. Today I'm greeted by 158738, not exactly the same really. I wander over to the Gate line and have a look see if there's anything of interest, needed for sight and unfortunately there wasn't. So after a brisk walk up to the North end of Platform 19, discovering nothing there, I had a walk down to the South end bays, to see what was stabled, expecting a skip and a sparky and was met by this lot

I certainly wasn't expecting these to be here, I thought they'd spend the night at Craigentinny, I was more than happy to see them again and as it turned out, I was just in time to be in position to see the 47 and the 20's to return South, which I managed to video on my phone and share via twitter

After a bit natter with a guy over to get a few pics of above move, I set off in search of a coffee, so off I trotted to Greggs, in the Waverley Mall, where I was informed for an extra 20p I could get any cake to go with it, the caramel and pecan doughnut, was screaming like a 56, pick me, so I did, went back outside, sat on the wall and waited to see if I'd cop any of the City's trams, sadly it wasn't to be and after half an hour, I made my way back down the ramp back to the platforms at Waverley. Finding a way onto the bay platforms via the top of Platform 11, no sooner had I walked in when my first cop of the day rolled in 158709, so I bailed back off the same way I got onto the North End bays and went to a TVM and parted with £2.60 for a Haymarket return, jumped on all round winner and very lightly loaded 158709 for a quick shufty through the tunnels and a change of scenery,

The flat sausages sound great! I haven't had them for ages! Was haggis part of it too?

I'm looking forward to the last bit too!

Twas normal sausages quinn. I was expecting square sausages too. No haggis, though i do like haggis. You wouldnt have had to wait for the rest of the trip report, had my 9yr old daughter, got up through the night and took the laptop. Little swine couldn't get back to sleep and posted this half and deleted the other 1/3 of the trip already written. She thought she'd saved it and is now sitting in her room staring into space with a cob on. Kids eh.

Ah, right. Odd for Scotland! I could still certainly go for some flat saussies right now though!

Darn it to the trip report - I've had a similar thing happen to me when the memory stick I was using broke and I lost one and a half trip reports (I was just using it while away from the computer and wifi).

Oh man kids eh? Two 20s, a 47 and an 86 all parked at the end of Waverley in 2016, who'd have thought that twenty years ago?
Really enjoyed all the reports 403. Especially the bit about the Australian guy, reminds me of the time I was on a steam railtour in the late 90s from Waterloo to Bristol and back behind U class 31625. I went with a steamy sandle wearing friend who let's just say had a few opinions and liked to share them at any opportunity. He spent a good hour telling everyone around him what a waste of time the GWR preservation group at Southall were and how they'd never get anywhere, then just as we were arriving at Bristol three of them (who'd remained very quiet up to then) informed my friend that they were in fact active volunteers at the place and that he didn't have a clue what he was talking about. Yeah, that was uncomfortable. Especially the four hour journey back to London in near silence. I found a droplight and spent the journey there, better to have an eyeful of smuts than sit in that atmosphere.
