If it is not a military secret, I would like to know more about the narrow guage lines which criss-cross the shingle on the Lydd Ranges in Kent. I assume their main purpose is to transport targets and munitions across the difficult terrain, but I don't know if the system is still working, or has fallen into disuse. What sort of vehicles are used?

Just did a little search for you Fergus and this is what I came up with...
You are correct about its use and I believe it is still in use but I stand to be corrected on that.
Locos sold in 2007 ex Lydd ranges... http://www.oldkilnlightrailway.com/hunslet.php

A quick Google search brings up quite a bit of info.
