Good news, the extension is due to open on March 27 and I might be able to be one of the first to use it! Bad news, I can't find a map of where the new stations are. The official site is no use whatsoever! So if anyone can link me to a map of the new lines and station I'd be very grateful, thanks!!

Hola, hi. Was in Malaga last week-started an InterRail of all things from there. Best site for this type of info and for all over this world: urbanrail.net. Map of MLg does show a planned/under constr. extension. It is more an in-between: tram-like stock, but all in tunnel, that looks like metro.
A few days later with the help of RENFE I was in Alicante and rode the now tram was once small train as FGV to the well-known seaside resort of Benidorm.
In between I managed to also visit the newly opened tram from Cadiz-runs by RENFE as Tram de Bahia, over Cercanias rails for some 10 km south and then als indeed a real tram via another village to another suburban town.

Just an update, I'm near Malaga right now but it's too darned hot to even consider taking a heaving weekend train and metro into town, so may go on Monday when it's forecast to be cooler.

I live in Malaga. If you are coming into Malaga this week, be aware that this week is Santa Semana and the city is packed. Because the Atarazanas station was built on the cheap, it is not very big and and during the peak hours of the processions, Atarazanas station is open for entry only and if you want to travel to the end of the line at Atarazanas, you will not be able to at these times and will have to leave the train at the new Guadalmedina station (near the El Corte Ingles department store) and walk the last few hundreds of metres over the bridge into the city centre. The buses are also not running down the Alameda Principal due to processions so you would need to use the temporary bus stops in the Muelle Heredia

Thanks, my barmaid was telling me about the festivities, was thinking visiting tomorrow (Mon) and it's not really my thing: so I'll give it a miss and try when it's quieter in autumn! Is the line to be further extended?

It is madness here in Semana Santa and I always get out of the city to escape the madness. It is however very spectacular if you have not seen it, possibly not for the full week though.
Metro Line 2 is going to be extended from Guadelmedina with three new stops northward to the proposed new Hospital Civil. It is going to be an underground extension and due to be completed in 2027. The tender for the first tranche of works to Calle Hillera were issued recently.
Since the new extension has been opened some of the political parties are now talking about reviving the old proposed line 3. From what I can work out, this may just be an extension to line 1 eastwards down from Atarazanas to the Malagueta and El Palo ( with a later extension to Rincon de la Victoria being discussed). Being mooted also is an extension of Line 1 to the Malaga Technical Park in the north west and line 2 west to the airport.
On another theme, there are still some vague hopes that the Spanish and Andalucian governments may extend the Malaga Cercanias westwards from Fuengirola to at least Marbella and Estepona and possibly all the way to Algeciras. This would also involve doubling some of current single track sections.
Some of these proposed extensions may get a boost if Malaga wins the right to host the World Fair in 2027.
Apart from the current Metro line 2 extension to the Hospital Civil, all the other projects are probably quite some way off - if they ever happen
