I'm planning on travelling from Malaga to Cadiz (3 nights stay) then to Córdoba 2(nights stay) and then back to Malaga.Would I have to book this in 3 legs( i.e. Malaga to Cadiz; Cadiz to Córdoba; Córdoba to Malaga) or would it be possible to book a return from Malaga to Cadiz which would allow a break of journey at Córdoba? Appreciate any feedback.

A previous journey from Málaga to Antequera with one change involved a separate ticket for each leg. Think you need a ticket for each train, including reservation, no standing allowed, so if it's full, you can't get on.

The Renfe web site doesn't like connections.
So it would be 3 legs.
I did Cordoba-Seville-Malaga recently and the local MD train via Bobadilla was very interesting, if rather slow in places (new CAF DMUs).
You get to see half-built sections of the Granada-Seville high speed line, starting and ending in the middle of nowhere.

I did Malaga-Sevilla by that route eight years ago and saw those track sections: progress a little slow then.

If you haven't stayed in Sevilla, I rate it well above Cordoba as a destination. (Cadiz looks interesting but I never made it there yet.)

You need to be carefull with the dates you are going. If there are any major Spanish holidays due & in particular the start of their summer holidays. Those lines are used by thousands of Morrocans who work in Spain & don't have cars to get to Algeciras to go home & visit family. The worse time is when the large car factories close for about two months in the summer & there is a massive exodus of Morrocans employed in them heading back home. Even off the trains the roads are horrific heading down to Algeciras and the accident rate is high due to severely overloaded cars piled high with consumer goods as presents for familiy back home.

Cadiz has had a lot of your money spent on it over the last 10 years and is well worth a visit. If you can rent a car for a day try and drive up to Minas de Rio Tinto to see the abandoned British built locos- its also a very pretty area and they also run tourist trains (occasionally steam hauled) along a section of the former mine system.

Cordoba & Jerez are well worth seeing as is Seville but I certainly wouldn't go any later than early June as it is far too hot. 40c in Cordoba is not unheard of.

Thanks for advice. Will be travelling to Cadiz on March 21st , where I am there for 3 nights. Everything is booked except the trains. There are some cheap tickets available from Malaga and I think I'll book them whilst they are available. I've heard great things about Cadiz and I really want to visit Córdoba. Seville will be on the agenda next year when I propose a grander tour of Spain. This is just a taster.

Good time of year. Cordoba needs a full day & Cadiz about 1/2. Try to get to El Puerto de Santa Maria nearby to Cadiz for supurb and cheap seafood. Jerez 1/2 day is fine for major sights.

I did the line around this time last year and indeed it was a pleasant run via Bobadilla/Pedrera/Osuna etc.

Shame the trains from Malaga to Seville aren't better timed for a day trip, I do recall the first train that I could connect to from Fuengirola being at around 10:30.

I've managed to source tickets which total just under 100 euros per person. TBH, I think I would call this a result. I could get the fares down if I wanted to travel at are more inconvenient times for me but the essence of this trip is seeing Cadiz, Jerez and Córdoba first and experiencing Spanish Train travel second. Managed to get a flight to Malaga from EMA, 7 nights accommodation in various apartments and all rail travel coming out at about 400 euros each. As I said, I could have knocked some money off for less convenient times and stayed in lower spec accommodation.

Incidentally, I used Loco2 and found it very easy to use.

Well just finished last leg of trip and am back in Malaga for final night. Really impressed with RENFE . Trains were very good and the leg room is really good. Didn't manage to take an AVE but was on an AVANT for the final leg from Córdoba. Córdoba was brilliant , had a lovely half day in Jerez and Cadiz, staying in the old town was fabulous. Loco2 were very good and I had no problems with the print at home tickets. There's been some money invested in the Spanish Railways and their mainline stations . Trains were well used and even turning up at Cadiz station 10 minutes before departure to Jerez automatically allocated seats on their systems. Get the structure right, and you get a very good railway. Already planning next years trip.

One of the oddities about RENFE main line services (not just high speed) is the need for a seat reservation, even on local MD trains.
So no overcrowding/standing I suppose.
That and the baggage screening before boarding.

The baggage screening was mainly confined to AVE and AVANT trains. For example, on the Media Distance Train from Cadiz to Córdoba, there was no baggage screening. However, in Malaga, all bags were screened to get access to platforms. I've also experienced baggage screening on the Fred Olsen Ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera. All the result of the Madrid atrocities. Their stations are large enough to accommodate these features though and queues moved very quickly

Indeed, Malaga Maria Zambrano station feels very weird once you're on the platforms.

Very spacious but a distinctly hushed feel. I also remember the Barcelona AVE departing while platform staff insisted on a ticket check. The result being that 50 or so passengers were left behind while it decided to depart!

I will be staying in Cadiz and would like to know if there is a train from the Malaga Airport to Cadiz and how far this town is from the train station? Are there any car rentals in Cadiz?
thank you

.

I can tell you that there's no direct service to Malaga Airport, with only the local EMU stopping there between Malaga and Fuengirola, albeit every 20 minutes.

Cadiz to Malaga Maria Zambrano station seems to require either a change at Cordoba, or Sevilla Santa Justa, or both.

A lot depends on your expected time of arrival at Malaga Airport. Use Loco2 web site to see the options. It's actually better than the RENFE site and you can book and print off your tickets at home.
