This is a simple question I hope !

There are 2 trains involved . the XC MAN-BRI and the FGW Great Malvern-Weymouth.
NRE gives a changeover station of Cheltenham but Bristol is my preferred option as the GMV-WEY is a rickety-bump, rickety bang, rickety bump (say it fast !) affair !

My question relates to the seat reservation.
If I request a seat reservation , will the system automatically assume that it will be MAN-CNM for the Cross country train ?
The reason is that I wish to stay on the XC service to Bristol but obviously don'r want to vacate my seat.
Is it just a case of specifying MAN-BRI for reservation purposes ?

Different booking engines have different algorithms applied so some might tell you to change at either of the Bristol stations while others at Cheltenham.

Try specifying "Avoid Lawrence Hill" or "Avoid Stapleton Road" and see how that goes. This should force the engines to avoid using the stopper between Cheltenham and Bristol Temple Meads.

WebTIS-powered sites (e.g. Redspottedhanky, Southern or East Coast) as well as takethetrain.co.uk plan this journey with a change at BRI, so if you book through one of these websites, you will get reservations correspinding to a change at BRI.
