The new operator isn’t exactly trying to look new or outstanding. Given the livery it’s typical McGills. We shall see how many drivers they lose in the coming weeks. They have a reputation which unfortunately proceeds them at every opportunity. Coming from Glasgow and Lanarkshire I have seen them many times try to take over companies, implement their management style and contracts and saw them fall flat on their backside. McNairns/United Coaches is a prime example; they spent millions buying up small independents only for said independents to go buy new/better buses and lo and behold 18 months later, the independents are back on their routes with newer fleets with McGills retreating into a corner cowering at the money they have wasted. They are worse than First. Believe me when I say the people of Scotland East think they are the saviour the now, give it a year and they be wishing First had stuck it out.
Coatbridge did turn into a joke for them but fortunately with the exception of the Livingston operations, competition barely exists elsewhere. McGill's bought it knowing they would have an easy ride for most places....the only ride.
McGill's exited that depot knowing there were other operators available for the work, because by then all they had were SPT services, so they were retendered at the end of their contracts.
Look at Stirling. Before coronavirus happened there were other services to Clackmannanshire, services going to Denny, even one going to Callender. Those are all gone now, they don't appear to be coming back two years later.
There's nothing in Falkirk other than the few Stagecoach services and two contracts run by Prentice Westwood. Nobody will even bother now given McGill's attitude to competition. There's been routes in that area for companies to try and give a better service, but nobody is interested in spending money to give it a shot unless it's tendered school services and even then they've largely been picked up by out-of-area companies these days.
Any focus on competition will be directed towards Eastern Scottish and Lothian Country. Nowhere else matters. McGill's obviously want to give it a try, they wouldn't do separate repaints for Eastern otherwise.
And at the end of it, they'll probably be left with a winner and loser, and the loser is out of the area. McGill's could cut their losses and improve Midland Bluebird instead, if it doesn't work out of course.
Has anyone else been disappointed with this weeks events? It's like everything is just limping along as before expect for a new App and website. I expected maybe 10 newer buses in the new livery to hit the road running while the rest of the fleet to have stickers on the outside of the buses to say McGills have taken over, plus every bus to have a new fleet number.
They clearly needed more time to get this ready, rather than a few weeks notice. The fact there's still buses going around with First stickers onthem tells you what you need to know.
