As a matter of interest, would it be the same locomotives that brought 008/010 that took these two to Crewe. I suppose having a loco on either end makes it relatively straightforward to uncouple the newest ones from the barrier vehicles and sandwich these two for going back.

Just a gentle reminder that thread is a Traction & Rolling Stock discussion to discuss Merseyrail Class 777s.

If anyone wishes to discuss infrastructure changes that are happening please create a new thread in the Infrastructure & Stations area; for speculation regarding changes that may or may not happen, please create a new thread in the Speculative Ideas section.

As always, feel free to use an existing alternative thread if there is one.

Thanks! :)

They are still digging the foundations at port sunlight. The transformer box is craned in next weekend over Saturday night so they better get shovelling. Tree screening is also in the pipeline after they cut loads down to enable the trains 5g

Any updates on the Class 777 testing, seems to have stalled recently-no overnight testing and testing on Sunday and Monday cancelled the past two weeks?
Are they planned to be testing this Sunday evening on Northern line and Monday on Wirral line?

There have been a few overnight possessions on the Southport and Ormskirk lines recently. Works in the Waterloo, Blundellsands and Hightown areas as well as tamping at Aughton Park and Ormskirk.

The testing (5T77) has appeared again on Sunday (for Northern line) and Monday evening (for Wirral line).

Could anyone please confirm if these are going ahead this week?

They have been cancelled the last 2 weeks.

As someone who lives relatively close to Cressington Station we received a "Railway Neighbour" letter yesterday from Network Rail advising us of "Signalling Improvement Work" in the coming weeks/months between Liverpool Central and Liverpool South Parkway.

This will be carried out during the night from 12/09/2020 to 27/11/2020.

Commissioning will then follow on the weekends of 10th/11th, 17th/18th & 24th/25th Jan 2021.

He said they’re going to try for the 3rd attempt, not that it was guaranteed to run. Not sure I’d name people from private groups here, either.

Does every single unit have to do a test run over the whole network, or is it just to check that dimensions are OK in which case if one fits, all should? If they do, it's going to take years at this rate before they are all ready to roll.

Each unit is required to cover a minimum of 1,500 miles on test fault free before being signed over to Merseyrail, so covering the whole network would bring this mileage down.

Yes but the reason for covering the whole network is presumably to make sure there are no problems with the positioning of signals, platforms etc. If that worked for one unit it would work for all. The total mileage of test running could be done on the most convenient stretches of line surely? I was just thinking, if there are so many delays to ensuring this all-line test, it would be a few years before every unit could be signed off.

The units on Merseyrail can rack the mileage quite quickly, hence the 508's which are being used very sparingly as they are near mileage........

A box will appear on the left hand showing activated with the date (today) and time activated. When you look on RTT about the departure time, a Realtime column will appear on the right hand side showing departure, passing times etc. If the train is running, you can follow it via Tracksy or Opentrain Train times which show signalling diagrams plus train descriptions.

But generally, if it’s activated two hours before it’s due to set off, it probably won’t run.

RTT shows 5T77 activated at 18.13. Wait and see.

As a further note, per RTT, the Derby Test Train left Derby RTC (ID 124X/1316) at 13.51. The schedule shows arrive Chester 01.28, then a full Wirral line sweep and back to Chester by 03.53. From experience of being woken up (pleasantly by two 73's top and tailed), the Derby RTC train has been very active on Merseyrail recently, presumably in connection with Class 777 testing.

What are the potential implications, options and timescales of not enough 777s being ready in time to take their place? Is it looking likely?

They have to get an extension as its not worth doing another end of mileage exam for the class 507/508.
