4 currently planned daily on Southports to Liverpool. Though today only 1 ran
Have 4 ever managed to run yet?

Given how few eight cars run, it seems almost pointless anyway. They would have been better off retaining the three pairs of class 507s until the 777s settled down. How many pairs of 777s are planned? And on which routes?
I believe 2 x 8 Cars are planned on the Ormskirk to Liverpool route in the long-term 777 plan and 2 on the Chesters.

There has been a couple of days of 4. I know I’ve seen a couple but normally it’s between 1-3

From what I read Merseyrail did want to keep 2x 6 car diagrams on the Ormskirk-Hunts X trains so that 8 car training/prep work could be accelerated but it was nixed from on high. (Ie metro mayor level)

I hope he's duly embarrassed at his bull-headedness every time they have to come out of the carriage sidings - not that I'm complaining when they do obviously!!

Surprised the Metro Mayor bothered with such low grade (to him) news.

That's just being stubborn for the sake of it. I can only assume that people who make these decisions don't have to suffer the consequences.

At the end of the day if a contract has been signed which says they should have the new trains in service by date x then Stadler should be footing the bill.

However given the BBC news report I very much doubt that is the case unfortunately and the tax payer has to foot the bill.

Would've made far more sense for them in hindsight to buy the old units they needed off angel trains at scrap value and then they could've recouped that cost when they finally did send them off for scrap.

Covid really didn't help with the introduction of this fleet either!

The idiot has moved on to bendy buses and a bridge over the Mersey now. No mention at all as to the dreadful service we are suffering any more. Cancellations are almost expected now it's got that bad.

The Ormskirk - Hunts Cross service is a mess this morning. The 06.36 from Hunts X went bang at South Parkway and was still there as of 07.25. Services are turning back in P5 there, but in between this 2O05 was allowed through and is consequently trapped at Hunts X. They obviously thought the problem was solved momentarily, but I think the moral of the story is never trust a 'treble seven'!

I think this also had a part to play in wanting as many 507s stood down from the 26th August......

I wonder what is the cost difference between using them and not using them. The lease cost will still be payable so it's basically the cost of doing the A exams every few thousand miles.

I was on a 777 for the first time for several months yesterday, expecting things to be "normal".
Trains were punctual and efficient (Hooton-Lime St), but the audio/visual PIS was completely out of kilter.
It kept resetting to "This is Hooton" throughout the journey, and didn't even reset at James St when the PIS normally resets for its outward journey to Chester.
Despite an on-board ticket check and police presence, no attempt was made to reset/disable the PIS, and no manual announcements of any kind were made.

The second and third 777 trips (Parkway-Central and Central-Hooton were fine.
I passed a single 507 on a Chester diagram.
On a dry mild day the leaf-fall timetable was overkill, with waiting time at several stations.

Welcome to merseyrail, where intimidating customers is always our focus above all else
I'd love to know how getting your ticket checked is intimidation!!!
If the pis fails mid journey the driver is meant to leave it until a terminal end, fiddling with equipment mid journey is not good practice.
Sadly pis faults on the 777s can also knock out the guards hand held devices meaning announcements won't work.

They have to bring a whole riot squad on board who spend half their time belittling passengers, it's absolutely unnecessary and if they have the time and money to fund them, they have the time & money to buy a working announcement system.

Yeah I've worked riots back in my police days and you're talking complete rubbish.
I've been a guard and a driver on Merseyrail and I can tell you it absolutely can be necessary.

I'd imagine the pis system needed a reset which as i said cant be done on the move. it happens, it happens occasionally on other tocs, road signs etc.

Talking about PIS issues I had two today - on my way back to Chester it decided to do it's obnoxiously loud "This Train Does not Call at Capenhurst" before Hooton - now why it has to be so loud I dont know. Funny thing is though the train I was on was and did call at Capenhurst!

The other one was on 507003 - the system decided not to update to a New Brighton service at James street and then carried on to Central and then kept repeating the "This is Liverpool Central where this train terminates" over and over on the displays and no further announcements! So just goes to prove that the older units can have issues as well.

On the 507 the driver has to manually update the PIS if I remember rightly, probably just forgot.

It is the duty of all TOCs to check tickets. LNWR and TPE in this area also use staff who are not the train manager/guard to check tickets on board as so many stations do not have ticket gates.
You are entitled to your own opinion but I for one would disagree with your comments.

Indeed.

When i see them in London/Croydon, the ticket inspectors turn up in force to do a whole train or tram. I imagine it is the most efficient way to get through a service. They are accompanied by support staff (British Transport Police or lookalikes). It might look intimidating but then I have seen how some fare evaders kick off.

I just wish they would sweep the late evening buses more often as some of the scrotes that get on blatantly without a ticket are rather anti-social.

It has been coming for weeks: service reductions on the Kirkby and New Brighton lines tomorrow due to a lack of available 777s.

Interestingly there doesn’t seem to be a 777/1 shortage today. Seems like they have chosen to punish passengers on the Kirby line instead of just being upfront and honest and taking a couple of diagrams off the ormskirk and Southport.

Edit: looking at departures from central it doesn’t seem like they are not running a full service. Makes me wonder if they simply would rather cancel services than save face and use the 507s

Just been thrown off the 5C34 service at Birkenhead Central after 777023 sat down.

They drove it off empty after about 2 minutes, so no idea what has gone awry!

I've just been on 777023 on the 1700 ish Chester service off Lime St. Full and standing from James Street physically no room at all for more to board at Hamilton Square. Quite literally crush loaded. We sat for about 10/15 minutes and were told 20-30 people had to get off otherwise the train will not move. A metro train that struggles with metro loadings. Fantastic investment, and no sign of the Chester line ever getting its peak capacity back either in their infinite wisdom to order less 777s than the 50X they replaced.
