I was in Liverpool recently and one of my first observations on the 777s was that the cosmetic wall panels were rather shoddily attached on several units, you could see the insulation behind the panels from the seats. That won’t be an issue here with longitudinal seating.
Thanks, will update the list (along with any other changes) this evening.
88 is the most heavily stripped unit to go yet. Completely devoid of windows and doors.
Edit: as of 16:22, 4088 has already been scrapped. So processed pretty much immediately upon arrival and finished in a very short period of time. Same yard in Bishop Auckland as 02 and 83.

The ones scrapped so far have all been long-term out of use and (in at least some cases) very heavily stripped for parts.
That said, 4083 was a bit of an eye-opener as that seemed to go from in service and a good performer to scrap pretty quickly.
Certainly the current situation on the Metro isn’t great by any measures, with the timetable having already been reduced they still can’t deliver a robust service.
Be interesting too see if there is further scrap moves this week. Starting too feel a little more the end is nigh for the old fleet with the daylight testing and the scrapping of 2 metrocars this week.
Next surely has to be one of 10, 34, 60, 61, 76 or 77? They’ve been stopped the longest.
Still find it staggering that 10, 60 and 76 have been dumped on the avoiding line for basically 2 years now and they’ve still not got rid of them, yet 3 units that have ran within last year have gone for scrap.
I’ll update the list to reflect 70 going for scrap. No other changes have happened in the 24 hours since the last update.

None of the scrapped units have ran more recently than July 2023. For 02, 55 and 62 it had been a lot longer.
There’s still several long term stopped units to go before withdrawals from the operational fleet begin.
There’s a lot of 555s waiting to come over and the Swiss want their siding space back, so the clear out of old stock from Gosforth has to make progress.
As for 4083, others can probably elaborate more than I can but I seem to recall an issue with it was found that was beyond (economical?) repair.
4040 isn’t any use on its own but hasn’t gone, presumably either it’s a very useful parts donor or Nexus have a departmental use in mind for it.

83 was the one that speared thru the school bus in the 80s. I was told the chassis was twisted which made the 3/4 life upgrade at wabtech a non starter. Someone else may know more though.
I’m sure one of the depot lads on here mentioned that the Un-refurbished models can still be coupled up for shunting purposes and the issues with coupling to refurbished units revolve around the SOS button situated in the wheelchair section. If 40 can still be used for shunting thing in and out of the sheds it would save the MAs of passenger serving cars for a while longer. Mind you I vaguely remember seeing 40 sitting complete stripped of even its half of its coupler components, headlight units and parts of body trim. If my memory is right, then it’s not even capable of shunting.

Speculation but could 4040 be useful as a source of cosmetic parts for any preservation attempt of 4001? Not that this seems to have helped either 4002 or 4083!

I don't fully buy that was the reason why it was not refurbished especially as it went through an half life refurbishment which included modifying the front ends. Both 4040/83 carried the Emirates livery so might of been to do with the contract of that before it got renew and 2 refurbished sets(4022 and 4033 if memory serves) received an updated version of it.
It would be good too see if some of these scrapped units brings more long term out of units back into action because it felt like on my last trip up there, it was the virtually the same units in service day in and day out which leaves very little margin for error and probably does not help with realiability.
With the first of the new Stadler units already being at Gosforth, the second unit en-route to Gosforth, and the announcement that the first Metrocar will enter preservation in the next few months, I’ve created this thread to keep track of the outgoing Metro fleet over the next 2 years as it’s withdrawn and units are preserved, scrapped or converted for other uses.
I’ve created a fleet list which I’ll keep updated.
The fleet situation is very fluid, with changes taking place often several times a week.
Key: Green - operational Red - withdrawn Orange - not operational, may return to service in the future Blue - Under attention Purple - non passenger use Grey - removed from Nexus property but survives Strikethrough - Scrapped
Units marked with * did not undergo the 2010-2015 Wabtec refurbishment, instead receiving corrosion repairs and RVAR mods at Gosforth between 2018-2020. They are not compatible with the wider fleet in service, however may run together empty.
Units marked with = did not receive the new male auto announcements in 2014-2015 and retain the previous female auto announcements. Announcements are controlled by the leading unit, the announcements installed on the leading unit will play through the full formation.
All units stored on the avoiding line have been vandalised.

I walked alongside the depot yesterday and noticed that the avoiding line has now been cleared of units. There were 4 units I could see which appeared to be out of service they were 52 coupled to 34, 80 & 63.

Interesting, the sidings must be full of trains with pans down, hopefully this means the scrapping of these trains will be occurring soon. Be interesting too see if another 2 or so will leave next week.
