Morning,

I need to go from MKC to Peterborough and retrun. I will travel out this Friday evening (after 1600) and come back on Sunday (say after 10am). I hold a Network Railcard if that helps. I am easy on routes and TOC's

The cheapest i seem to be able to get it is a stupidly large amount. I started at the "normal ticket" you would get by putting the journey into National Rail and had a starting price of £82.50! FFS that is mad.

Even splitting i cant seem to get a decent fare. I am no expert on the system down here yet and would appreciate any help.

thanks

Would you take the Route via St Neots on the X5 Coach?

Milton Keynes - St Neots One Month Return £11.60 X5 Timetable

X5 Website

St Neots - Peterborough 2 x SDS £5.50

total cost = £22.60

Using the X5 bus from MK to St Neots & change there on to a FCC service to Peterborough may be quicker.

Finsbury Park - Huntingdon £18.50 Off Peak Return Not London

Huntingdon - Peterborough 2 x Anytime Single @ £5.00 each No railcard discount as the boundary is Huntingdon

Total Cost £40.00

with a bit of fiddling i can get the following fares:

MKC-Nuneaton £10.90
Nuneaton - Peterborugh - 7.00

(And the same on the retun leg on Sunday)

Is that route ok? Can i get the LM discount? Is it not XC?

Milton Keynes to Nuneaton is priced by Virgin, but the fare you've quoted is an LM only Super Off Peak. Not sure whether that means you can get the disocunt or not. The Nuneaton to Peterborough fare is an Advance on XC.

£10.90 is the Super Off Peak Single, The ticket you would want is the Off Peak Return as the Super Off Peak Return is not in the 50% Sale.

MKC - NUN £7.75 Off Peak Return Route London Midland Only

The £7.00 NUN - PBO is an Advance Single each way. Yes that Route is Okay. Just remember if you book the Advance tickets you are tied to the Particular Train you book for :)

I understand your objection to travelling by the buses, however with the inconvenience of travelling on the railways for such a journey, I would think that Stagecoach's X4 bus must be in with a shout. There is a journey at 1650 on Friday and a few journeys on Sunday all running direct MKC - Peterborough. I'm not sure how much it is but you can ring them on 01604 676060 and I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you. Doubt it will be more than £10/15 as it is not a premium service like the X5 is.

Shouldn't cost more than a Dayrider Gold ticket at £7.20.

How about an East Midlands Rover 3 in 7? £71. Covers Stoke, New Mills, Meadowhall, Doncaster, Barton, Cleethorpes, Skeggy, Peterborough, Bedford, Bletchley, Rugby-Coventry-Nuneaton, Stafford and all points inside these...

He is not doing a day return so no more than 2 x Dayrider Gold for the return journey.

Isn't a Dayrider Gold now £10.30 or am I missing something here?

Hmmm. if you buy it on a Northampton-based vehicle, it seems you're correct.

There seem to be quite different prices depending whether you buy it in Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Cambridgshire, Bedfordshire or wherever.

The current price if bought in Cambridgeshire (or presumably on a vehicle operating from a Cambridgeshire depot) is given on the Stagecoach website as only £7.20 - see http://www.stagecoachbus.com/cambridge-daygold.aspx.

So what would you be charged on the X4, which runs from Cambridgeshire via Northants to Buckinghamshire ??!!

I believe they are operated from Kettering mainly. Not sure if some journeys are operated by other depots.

The X4 is a United Counties route so I would imagine the Northampton fares will be charged.

Fares always seem to be different around.. In Tewkesbury if i buy a £19 gold rider for one week, i can go as far as Andover in the south, and Wales, also Oxford city. When I've been to Wales I've always noticed that the Eqivalent Gold Rider is £21...

 So does make me wonder what Pricing Structure Stagecoach have.

Long term issue.

For example, for use along the South Coast, at Poole bus station, I hop on a First Southern National X53 and buy an Explorer for £7 and then hop off straight away onto a Wilts & Dorset bus, which would have charged me £7.50.

(Well the prices seem to have harmonised a lot in the last few years. At one extreme a few years back, I remember the one issued by a First driver to be £5 and £7.99 from a W&D driver.)

Dayrider Golds around here are £7.70, while the Explorer ticket is £8.20 on Stagecoach buses. Brighton & Hove and Metrobus sell Explorers for £7  Even if someone in Brighton only wants Stagecoach that day they're better off buying the ticket on a local route first.
