Mixed freight - why so rare in the UK?

the Portbury - Mossend service. This is nominally for automotive traffic, but regularly turns up with a few BDA wagons carrying steel re-bar, or a van or two tagged on. When it reaches Warrington Arpley for a traction change in the early hours of Wednesday and Saturday mornings, it has the chemical traffic from the INEOS Chlor works at Runcorn, added to it.

I was thinking of this kind of thing really. But this is quite unusual I think.
