Just been reading the Virgin Easter & May Day Holiday travel guide. The usual set of rail replacement coaches of course, and one "mystery". Amongst the lines said to be affected by engineering work is "Lockerbie and Annan". Is this the location of the strategic reserve ? A line so secret that even Marples/Beeching did not know about it, and so failed to close ?
(Carlisle to Annan/Dumfries seems to be operating normally on those dates, according to National Rail journey planner.)
The leaflet also suggests alternative routes to destinations affected by engineering work. For London to Stoke (& Macclesfield), the suggested route is from St. Pancras, changing at Derby. Sounds like fun - lots of extra passengers trying to use single 153s on the Derby - Stoke - Crewe services -- or will someone tell East Midland and loan them extra stock for that weekend ??
