Peel Ports is set to launch a new rail container service for its customers using the Port of Liverpool. The company is in advanced contract discussions with both a rail provider and shippers, with the aim of running the first services before the end of 2017.

It is the first time Peel Ports has offered an integrated package, giving shippers a seamless route to market, from quayside to any UK destination served by major rail lines, or vice versa.

The service will be presented tonight (12 September) at a London International Shipping Week hosted at the Lloyds Building by Peel Ports, where leading figures in the UK retail and logistics community will gather to discuss the importance of integration in improving supply chain efficiency.

Peel Ports is also backing calls from Liverpool Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram for significant investment in the Victorian-era rail infrastructure serving the east-west corridor....
Just been reading this article about a new Freight service starting from Liverpool at the end of this year and i was wondering if anyone knew anything further about this as there was little information in the article, Recently DB Cargo have made Paths from the port to Mossend and GBRF have made paths to Hams Hall so it makes me wonder if either of these is the service thats due to start?

Plenty of discussion of Peel's plans and aspirations here:

Peel announce a return of intermodal trains from the Seaforth railhead to Mossend from next month.

https://www.peelports.com/news/2018/peel-ports-partners-with-db-cargo-for-first-rail-freight-service
Hans-Georg Werner, CEO from DB Cargo UK said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside Peel Ports on this exciting new initiative. Introducing express rail services between Liverpool and Mossend is a really sustainable solution, significantly reducing the need for HGVs to travel thousands of miles on our roads each week. Peel Ports’ vision to offer customers a seamless end-to-end service resonates with our own drive for higher standards of service and flexibility for our customers. We look forward to seeing our partnership grow in the years ahead.”

They must have managed to negotiate a better path if they expect the service to reach Mossend by 23:00. The path that has been in for ages but never used arrives at 01:36. 11 1/2 hours from Liverpool - Mossend. Or pehaps they are anticipating using a locomotive rather than a horse and cart.

RTT reveals it to be the same path:

But of course it runs in the day and has to "stand aside" for Pendolinos, Voyagers, Desiros, etc meaning it spends roughly 5 hours en route doing nothing. Such are the realities of a mostly two-track mixed-traffic railway.

The timings change slightly from 21/05: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/H45841/2018/05/21/advanced

The revised arrival time on that schedule is 01:00, so 36 mins earlier than the one you've linked. Changes include:
  • No longer booked to sit at Springs Branch Jn
  • No longer booked into Carlisle New Yard
  • Earlier arrival at Quintinshill Loops and earlier departure
  • Same as above but with the Lockerbie & Beattock loops
  • Booked to sit at Beattock Summit from 23:16 - 23:25
  • Booked to sit at Carstairs from 23:51 - 00:26
The Southbound is down as running until 17/05, though I can't find any Southbound paths after that to see if any changes have been made there too.

That’s just an excuse and a lazy one at that. For a start if you look at the schedule it spends over an hour in 2 different loops. When passenger services run at the same minutes past each hour pathing wouldn’t cause it to spend over an hour in a loop. Also there is a Freightliner intermodal that runs exactly 1 hour ahead of it at Preston and that arrives at Coatbridge at 20:31.

It’s a Class 4 not a Class 8.

Tell that to the timetable planners!

If you'd actually bothered to look at other services you'd see that the wait at Tebay is to allow a Freightliner past and that at Lockerbie is to allow a mail train past. Essentially it departs an hour too early from Liverpool to avoid tripping up over peak hour services south of Preston and then gets "bumped" by the mail. In this case being a Class 4 can't magically create an ideal path no matter how "special" you think such a designation is. Next time the WCML timetable is rewritten I would expect a much better path to be found as it would now be a permanent service.

New services start that could help kick start the use of rail services.

https://www.peelports.com/news/2018/port-of-liverpool-to-receive-new-container-services

PORT OF LIVERPOOL TO RECEIVE NEW CONTAINER SERVICES

Peel Ports’ flagship deep-water container terminal, Liverpool2, will welcome its largest regular caller to date when 2M (Maersk and MSC alliance) introduce a new transatlantic container service to the port beginning 22 July 2018.

2M is switching its TA2 service from Felixstowe to Liverpool on a temporary basis. At the same time, Maersk Line’s South American service, Colombia Express, will also start calling at the port of Liverpool, exporting UK goods to Newark.

Liverpool will be the final port of call for both weekly services as they head westbound across the Atlantic. The ships will load UK export cargo such as Scotch whisky, food products and trade machinery. The new services will also see the Port of Liverpool open up direct links with the US ports of Charleston and Savannah.

The TA2 and Colombia Express routes will use a range of vessels up to 8500 TEU. The larger vessels will call at Liverpool2 with smaller vessels using Royal Seaforth Container Terminal.....
