Continuing the weekend theme on train cancellations GTR have tonight (Saturday 16.07 into Sunday 17.07) cancelled the last TWO Kings Cross to Cambridge trains (23:59 and 00:33 ex KGX).

I enquired at Finsbury Park about what provision was being made for Cambridge passengers, staff I spoke to were unaware that they had even been cancelled and suggested getting the next train to Letchworth and the staff there would sort a taxi.

NRE suggests there is a bus departing LET at 01:55 arriving CBG at 03:09. That’ll be rather painful for anyone travelling to Cambridge, the only consolation is at least they’ll get home with a delay approaching 2 hours.

Thankfully I’m not travelling to Cambridge but another example of fragile travelling by train has become.

On the south side of the network, there were plenty of cancellations as well and the usual inability of the staff at Redhill to hold the last connection to Reigate for a late running Thameslink train from London.

The 2124 Peterborough to Horsham started at Finsbury Park, running just under 20 minutes late. What should be 2300 from London Bridge to Redhill for 2332 actually arrived at 2353, missing the connection into the 2349 to Reigate which left on time. As ever, Redhill station staff indicated that they have no authorisation to delay trains to Reigate. Quite annoying that the last train to Reigate from Victoria is usually 2309 but when there is engineering work, getting to London Bridge at 2300 does not guarantee a through journey to Reigate.

UPDATE

GTR are running an unadvertised 00:58 from Welwyn Garden City to Cambridge.

Good work, and it at least sorts out passengers from the cancelled 23:58, but not the 00:33, unless they hold it at Stevenage until the 00:46 from St Pancras (which is running 10 late) arrives.

EDIT - the late running 00:46 wasn’t held (TBF that was probably a bit too optimistic) so passengers hoping to get the 00:33 will be on a bus from Letchworth.

Had my own experience trying to get home after GTR cancelled the last three trains from Southampton Central to Littlehampton (22:21, 22:26 and 23:45 ex SOU) on the 12th February (also a Saturday) and I needed to make a connection onto the Brighton train there.

Thankfully my experience was vastly better than the above and South Western Railway ordered a taxi for me all the way to my home station - even managed to get in before the train from Littlehampton would’ve arrived!
