I booked a ticket through the MSE Skycanner offer and they seem to do things in a very odd way. I booked an Off Peak Day Return from Kemsley to Hampton Court, and instead of just getting the two tickets, the TVM churned out three pointless, and inexplicable, seat reservation coupons (Sittinbourne to Victoria, Victoria to Clapham Junction and London Bridge to Sittingbourne). I never requested any reservations, and where the carriage and seat details would be is just blank...well with asterisks. Most odd.

Counted place reservations are basically a “hack” to the seat reservation system used to show the trains customers may travel on who have Advance tickets but where the Toc in question does not offer specific seat reservations.[1]

If you select any train that offers them on most (all?) booking engines then you will get them, it is not peculiar or unique to this one. I once booked a walkon journey from somewhere on the SWT network to London Terminals, requesting a change at Clapham Jct to go into Victoria and got one for the journey on the Southern train. Regularly also get them for local journeys on Northern Rail’s diesel network.

[1] One notable exception is the Welsh franchise where they use Counted place reservations for Advance tickets but you can obtain a proper/normal seat reservation for Walkon tickets or by request (eg. at the booking office).

TPE also offer them in conjunction with Advance Purchase On The Day (APOD) tickets.
