As part of the trip discussed in this thread, I'll be taking a domestic flight from Huatulco (HUX) airport, near Salina Cruz - the southern end of the Tren Interoceanico (the HST-operated line).
The question, then, is how best to reach HUX from Salina Cruz.
Based on the research I've done, it would appear there is a non-stop coach service a few times a day from Salina Cruz to what Rome2rio.com describes as "Santa María Huatulco". I can't find the timings for this from the "horse's mouth" so I am treating this with a truckload of salt, but it would appear that the destination refers to the bus station called "Santa María Huatulco" - which is actually located in the town of La Crucecita on the coast, somewhat near Santa Cruz Huatulco. The bus station must be at least half an hour's drive from the eponymous town of Santa María Huatulco, so it's rather a misnomer if that is indeed what the bus stop is called!
La Crucecita appears to be a rather touristy and popular town so it may well be worth staying overnight there, rather than in the more industrial city of Salina Cruz. But if it turns out the coach service doesn't take you anywhere near La Crucecita, are there any feasible alternatives?
I couldn't find any evidence of car rental locations anywhere near Salina Cruz, so I suppose it would be a case of taking a taxi. I'd be in a group so the cost could be split, but is this even a job that local drivers are likely to want to do? And if so, what sort of order of magnitude of cost might we be looking at? Rome2rio.com suggests $2-4 which is obviously nonsensical.
From La Crucecita I presume there wouldn't be any difficulty getting a taxi for the short journey to HUX.
Thanks for any suggestions! I realise this is a very specialised query but it may be of relevance to anyone else who fancies trying out the Mexican HSTs...
