This year. I have been doing a few trips on the railway as back in June. I bought myself one of those East Midlands Rover 3 in 7 Day Pass and here is my June report summary.

June 13th 2017.
Oakham to Peterborough (Bus)
Peterborough to Newark Northgate (Class 91 225 set)
Newark Northgate to Newark Castle (on foot/legged it to get there in time for 60063)
Newark Castle to Nottingham (Class 156)
Spent an afternoon at Nottingham filming/photographing trains
Nottingham to Leicester (Class 222)
Stayed at Leicester for a short time to film/photograph trains. Things went chaotic and didn't go to plan due to a failed Class 66 freight blocking Platform 3 :(.
Leicester to Oakham (Class 170)
Overall a good day :).

Here is some photos from the day.

This is the culprit that failed at Leicester that day and chucked a spanner into my filming plans. Better luck next time for me perhaps :).

June 14th 2017
Oakham to Peterborough (Class 170)
Peterborough to Doncaster (Class 91 225 set)
A pause at Doncaster with some photography
Doncaster to Barnetby (Class 185)
An afternoon/early evening at Barnetby for photos/videos. I got some awesome footage that day too :).

Some excellent photos there mate. I especially like the EMT HST at Nottingham.
I was surprised to see a Northern 150 at Nottingham, it's always been a 158 on the Leeds service when I've done it.

I was thinking much the same, a Northern 150 (or indeed any 150!) in Nottingham seems most unusual.

Some nice shots there too, including places like Newark Castle which I still haven't been to yet :)

Thanks guys :). To be honest in regarding the NR Class 150/1. I wasn't expecting to see that one at Nottingham as its normally 158's and I think the last time I saw a 150 at Nottingham was about 2001 or even earlier in Centro colours.

Anyhows its time for the July logs and its a double visit to Barnetby in sheer determination to get that Colas Ribble Bitumen to Lindsey which will follow after the train ride logs :).

July 7th
Oakham to Peterborough (Class 170)
Peterborough to Doncaster (Class 91 225 set)
Doncaster to Barnetby (Class 185)
A day at Barnetby for photos/videos
Barnetby to Doncaster (Class 185)
Doncaster to Grantham (Class 91 225 set)
Grantham to Nottingham (Class 156/153)
Nottingham to Leicester (Class 222)
Leicester to Oakham (Class 170)

Was a good day as I got some more photos although I heard from another enthusiast that 60001 failed, so 60091 was working both of the oil trains that run from Kingsbury to Lindsey/Humber Oil Refinery and 60091 was really being thrashed on that day as well.

Here is the photos of the trip :).

My "Auto-Focus" on my Canon EOS 600D decided to not play ball on this next photo . So apologies for the fuzz on the photo.

The next one was okay though :).

Some good haulage that day even for a Friday! ;).

July 11th 2017
As I bought another of those 3-7 day East Midlands Rover Tickets (great rail pass in my view). I decided to have another day at Skegness as last time I didn't enough left over to buy another couple of those "Nemsis Now" dragon models. So I went to Skegness again purposely to buy those and to have a great day at the seaside. However it was wet and rainy that day. So no photos despite that I took my camera as I didn't want to lose another camera to the elements :).

Oakham to Leicester (Class 170)
Leicester to Nottingham (Class 222)
Nottingham to Skegness (Class 153/156)
A day at Skegness for shopping and chilling)
Skegness to Nottingham (Class 153/158)
Nottingham to Leicester (Class 222)
Leicester to Oakham (Class 170)

Another enjoyable day and two more dragon figures in my collection! :).

July 12th 2017
Another try at Barnetby having failed to get the Colas 60 last time. But when I determined to get photos of that train. I will not stop until I have succeeded in my mission of which this trip was mission successful as will be shown in the photos below after the travel summary.

Oakham to Peterborough (Class 170)
Peterborough to Doncaster (Class 91 225 set)
Doncaster to Barnetby (Class 185)
Another day at Barnetby to try and get the Colas 60. I bagged two that day as the second one was a "fly-by" from the train window :). Also another few nice trains as well.
Barnetby to Doncaster (Class 185, 185126)
Doncaster to Peterborough (Class 91 225 set)

I was also going to do a Pacer train ride from Doncaster to Scunthorpe but I didn't fancy the screech and the bounce from the railbus, so I took a pass. But I will try again either later this year or next year if they are still in service.

Here is the photos from a fantastic day at Barnetby and a Class 67 at Doncaster I did too :).

Finally I bagged 60087 on a "Fly-by" ride as I took this on the train home :).

Enjoy the photos and more will come from my other planned trips as and when time/funds permit :).

What happened to the white balance in some of those photos on the second Barnetby trip? That was blinding!

I haven't had a session at Barnetby since 2005, been way too long and I need to go back!

I've had 150214 from Meadowhall to Leeds on an ex Nottingham service in 2015 and just last week I noted 150277 ticking over on a Leeds to Nottingham train. So it does happen every so often!

Hi guys,

Unfortunately the sun was blazing hard when it came out from the clouds. Being a novice user of DSLR. I am not the best at taking photos. But I am learning through trial and error :). So I do apologise for the over-exposed ones that are a wee bit too bright. I recommend a trip for anyone to Barnetby, but please avoid Fridays unless there is a charter as from experience. There was less freight and the best day is Wednesdays as you will get to see the Neville Hill to Lindsey working as long as it is not cancelled for some reason.

As for the gen on the Class 150's. Thanks for the information mate as I honestly thought it was an oddball. But next time I am in Nottingham, I will press my luck and try and do a train ride video on an NR 150 :).

My next photos will be taken further afield which I am personally looking forward to doing. So I won't ruin anything right now. But all will become clear in a fortnight or so ;).

Suspense, love it!

Fair game on the photos, all a matter of practice. I don't do much in the way of photos these days, the odd grab 'n' go photo on my phone is about it these days for me.

That's overexposure. I suggest exposure locking on ballast as it's a good contrast between the lightest and darkest things in the photo; you need something about midway between the brightest and darkest parts. Metering on something too bright (for example the yellow front end) makes the darker things much darker so you lose all the detail. Metering on something too dark makes the white (for example from the clouds and yellow front end) bleach the photo as you've seen. It's a case of choosing something at the time of the photo to meter on but, as I've said, ballast is a good one to start with.

A good few reports there by the way, and I hope the photo advice helps :)

Hi guys,

I thought I should mention that the photos of 67028 and 60087 were taken with my Sony WX200 as I tend to carry that on me when I am out and about as it helps with getting some trains on a "fly-by" or if I do not have the time to root out the DSLR :). I use the "Intelligent Auto" with the flash disabled, so I can get the best settings quickly on that camera.

A big thanks there fishquinn. I use the rotary dial on the top of my DSLR to adjust the ISO between 100 and 200. So I am wondering if I should have set it and left it at ISO100 as that seems to be the norm that my camera chooses for taking train photos outdoors. I will keep that note aside and I will have a tinker with the camera settings so that if the sun does decide to come out of the clouds at full blare at the last minute. Any bleaching should be minimised at the very least if not eliminated :).

Hi i'm new to the forum but plan to have some trip contributions soon.

Interesting regarding your autofocus problem on the Canon Eos 600 for your 60091 photo, i've been having similar autofocus issues with my similar camera. Its most annoying and always seems to be on 'important' photos.

Interesting to read your reports :)

Hello Andy,

To be honest mate and looking back. I think the problem with that photo was due to one of the "dots" on the viewfinder was on the anti-climber spike (that purple bar thing) and I didn't note that at the time I half depressed the shuttter switch to set the auto-focus before I fully pressed it to take the shot. So although I was a bit "cheesed off" to say it nicely. I wasn't as annoyed as I would have been if it was something like 60001 that was floating about there 2 days earlier :).

Its all trial and error with my and my DSLR and I am sure I will become better the more I go out and use it and also learn from other photographers that know their stuff. Those "dots" in the viewfinder for the auto-focus should never be underestimated ;).

might be worth having a go with those over exposed pics on photo editing software, I use piccasa and for a free program it does a good job and saved me some shots i would have normally deleted (and keep up the good work on this thread :) )
