I am in desperate need of advice for a model that just doenst seem to work.

I brought one of hornbys 8F models 48151 from Antics at http://www.railway-models.co.uk since receiving it i have had a problem which required me to send back to them for repairs. The problem i found was that after a little running its performance was slowing, and slowing and slowing until a stop, it wouldnt move until i applied full voltage and push it fairy hard to get the wheels turning. I suspected the motor being at fault as it was suspiciously noisy.

On its return the motor i think was replaced as it was sent back to hornby and it was brilliantly greased up and ran quietly, the only reason i had for opening it up was for installing a hornby DCC chip. Now again the same problem has occured and i am getting fed up with this model.

Obviously i need to email the site, however im not sure if they will do the repairs again, except i doubt that repairs will suit if the problem occurs again...

Any ideas?

They have no choice but to replace it - under the Sale of Goods act and the Distance Selling Regulations if they sell a product that isn't up to the specified standard (ie, runs OK and isn't defective) then they have to replace it until it is ....

Excellent! except their last 8F 48151 was sold recently, should i be asking for a replacement of that same model or one with equal value? bearing in mind that this 8F has now been discontinued i think...

Hmm, it would appear today that my loco is running fine again after a de-railment on some points.

I am timing it flat out to see how fast it can acheive a lap of my track average at current is 47 seconds. With a bit of running in today we'll see how it does, but it no longer even shorts out anymore either. This could be a bit embarrising if i tell antics seeing as yesterday i sent of an email saying that i wasnt satisfied seeing as it wasnt running.

Is there any surprise if the motor becomes hotter, one of the reasons i think it is running smoother is because it appears that oil they applied to the cogs inside is becoming softer under the heat?

Degrease it completely and then apply a SMALL amount of oil to the gears. Bachmann locos suffer from the same problem. Also, while you have it in bits, give the pickups a thorough clean, along with the backs of the wheels where the pickups make contact, it is possible some grease got there too.
