Just wondering, Mr Postye, if it was 150261 you saw at Bristol TM. This unit went to Wolverton in January with body corrosion and one car returned recently to PM and which will have to return to Wolverton again. .

Philipe

How certain are you that 150261 is not in service?
Just it was reported on this forum to have been traction on the Mendip Sprinter rail tour from Bristol last Saturday

Try asking in the TOPS request thread in the allocations part of the forum.

DOH! Why didn't I think of that earlier? That's what 12.5 days on the rails does for you.
Have now done so

I may have to apologise re 150261 due to the fact I may have misunderstood the message I read elsewhere. It said that one coach arrived back on it's own and that it would have to go back to Wolverton for DDA mods. I took this to mean now, but could be in the future. Let's see what TOPS enquiries bring up as the other carriage may have been returned and re-united with the other..

Must say, that shade of blue looks rather smart, even though I did like local lines livery.

Same livery as 202 + 216 (with their horrible seating) now.

Day 12 - Sunday 14th September

Aims for the day - Blackpool North, Shotton - Wrexham & Manchester Airport lines.

A later start today as it's a Sunday and services start later, so I got to Preston for the 0919 to Blackpool North on 156461.
Upon approach to the station 142024, 156429, 150116 & 153328 were in the sidings along with another 150/1 and a 153, while 185142, 185115, 158758, 158753, 150113 156425 & 142061 were in the platforms at North Station.

I went for a stroll in Blackpool hoping to find a Costa for a decent coffee, but after 20 minutes of walking around I admitted defeat and settled for a tea from Pumpkin on the station before getting on 185144 for the 1044 to Bolton. Trains were being terminated at Bolton due to engineering works, although the 1147 from Preston to the airport was apparently running through, so I changed at Preston onto the crazily packed 185116, so glad I got a first class ticket!
At Manchester Piccadilly there was an ATW 150/158 combo in one of the platforms so I went to investigate, but it was dud 158841/150229, however 156472 pulled in on P14 with a Chester to Southport train which was needed in the book.

As I've not been to Manchester Airport by train I took a ride down there on 185126, before crossing from P1 to P3 onto 185103 to get back to Piccadilly. I needed to head towards Shotton to get the line to Wrexham in the book. I had a short 10 min wait here for 175105 For the run over to Chester through Warrington, where 142054,156424, 142057, 175001,175003 were noted in the station/yard, then 7 minutes to change onto another 175, 175112, for the short hop over to Shotton. fortunately I had done the Bidston - Shotton line on a Cheshire rover as there's engineering works on that stretch today.

I board 150217 which has quite a dent on the front of it, I assume it's had a bump with something. Not really much to say about the trip down to Wrexham - it's very rural and quiet - so quiet there's no mobile signal for most of it. Arrival into Wrexham Central and there's about 20 minutes before the train heads back so I decide to have a walk into the town before re-boarding at Wrexham General, except it's shut - all the shops are shut and it's dead quiet. A gentle stroll over to General and it's full of coaches as there's more works going on here for the redoubling of the line to Chester.

Back to Shotton and I've got 25 mins for the next Crewe bound train, so a swift half in the railway hotel before strolling down the Bidston platform to wait for my next move which turns up with 175107, although just as we're pulling away 150229 pulls in with 158827 on the Holyhead train, 827 provides another winner.

Nothing seems to have moved in Chester as we pass through on the way to Crewe, and my phone rings at an inopportune moment, just as we are passing Crewe Electric so I missed the line of 90's, so as there was another service back to Chester I jumped on the dud 221111 and noted 90023, 90030, 90032, 90038 & 90040, the others were all obscured by walls, wagons & trees.

175114 was next to take me back to Crewe where 156410 was noted on the 1908 Crewe-Derby, another late winner. Finally 221105 arrived with the 1909 back to Preston. Not a bad day, some good coverage for the atlas and 3 winners for sight.

Day 13 - Monday 15th September

Aims for the day, Carlisle - Newcastle & the Cleveland Coast

I was going to have a slightly later start, but I was awake early so I make it back to Preston station in time for the 0656 down to Wigan on 390156, where a caffeine boost is needed from pumpkin to wake me up properly. I was awake but not awake if you know what I mean.

I hang about on Wigan at the south end of the station so I can catch the units to/from Wallgate. 5 units noted from Wallgate and 10 at North Western, but Nothing close to a winner down here today so I hop onto 390009 for the run up to Carlisle and a chance to sample Virgins Breakfast.

Arrival at Carlisle was just in time to see 66103 power through the station southbound with a freight. 156486 was noted with a service to Lancaster via Barrow before 156510 arrived with the 0939 to Newcastle. Unfortunately the weather isn't up to much today and it's pouring with rain for the trip across Hadrians Country towards Newcastle. The advantage of taking the. Scotrail/Northern service to Newcastle is that is approaches from the back of Gateshead and the High Level bridge to platform 1, more new track covered. As we pulled into P1, 142020 was already stabled there, another winner!

I was due to meet my mum for lunch, but I hung about just incase my last TPE UNIT was on the 1117 arrival - alas no.

After lunch and a Costa to keep me going down the East Coast and still no luck on the 1310 dep or 1315 arrival TPE services, however 142079 arrived with an ex-Carlisle service, that's one for the book.

Fortunately 156475 arrived to form the 1330 Nunthorpe service, I had been dreading doing all that wY in a pacer! Over the bridge in the other direction heading toward Sunderland and the weather hasn't improved at all, and I fact upon leaving Sunderland got worse - fog - so thick you could barely see past the tracks, only occasional glimpses of houses along the line breaking through the fog. Oh well.
The fog started to ease around Stockton, just in time to see what's left of the old Thornaby depot. Well when I say what's left of it, there's a brick shed and loads of smashed bricks all over the place. Such a shame, I remember a number of visits to Thornaby in the late 80's and 90's and they were always one of the more accommodating depots .

I'm changing at Middlesbrough, and 142070 provides my ride into Darlington, another of them stations with fantastic architecture and a train shed full of history.

82206 & 91126 are pulling in to take me down to York where I note my second class 68, 68002, along with 1851511,185122 & 185149 but still no 108!

185102 pulls into Platform 3, a last minute change from Platrom 5, cue people scrambling a cross the footbridge. I take 185102 across the Pennines to Manchester Victoria, where 45 minutes of hanging around produces winners 150225, 153351 & 150268 before heading over to Piccadilly to catch the 1855 to London on 390132.

An interesting sight as we left Manchester was EMT combination of 156497&158854 on platform 13 with the 1843 Liverpool - Norwich service. I didn't know 156's ever got onto this route, I assume the 156 is detached at Nottingham?

On departure from Crewe finally the Virginia catering staff decided to offer refreshments, although the Pork in cider Stew was not as nice as it sounds, still it washed down well with the red wine.

156s do end up on EMT's Liverpool to Norwich services on a seemingly regular basis. On all of the limited times I've seen those services this year, 156s have been on around 30% of them. As far as I know it's normally detached at Nottingham but I couldn't say for sure.

Glad you managed to get the High Level Bridge covered from the Carlisle direction, it is difficult to get in from experience.

Enjoyed the read as always :)

Day 14 - Tuesday 16th September

The plan for today was "contingency". I had expected somewhere in a two week high mileage trip across the country to have had delays somewhere that would have caused me to miss a chunk of my original plan, but I've been really fortunate that most of it has gone reasonably to plan, the only 2 bits that were really missed were the LM WCML branches where I lost my planned itinerary, and the Blannau Ffestiniog line where I woke up late, so I sort of had 4 options for today

1, try and get up to North Wales and do the branches
2, do the London Midland Branches
3, try and get up north to chase down some of my sight required Northern Units
4, go to East Anglia as I haven't been there this trip

I ruled out 1 due to Virgins unreasonable (IMO) restrictions of not being able to leave London on a useful train until after 10.00 meaning an earliest arrival in Llandudno after lunchtime. Number 2 I ruled out as can do on a Great Escape, especially as most of it will be std and this is the last day of making use of 1st.
Anglia I have done a few times recently, and usually have fairly good advances from London. It might have been different if the short set was running - but it's not, so back up North won the day.

0613 start from the station to get to Kings Cross to get the 0722 Hull train as far as Doncaster, unfortunately for me it's 180109 again so not one of the 2 I still need to ride on. 67024 was on thunderbird duty at Kings Cross today and we headed northwards. Unfortunately today is another day for not seeing much from the windows, it's foggy and seems to be getting worse the further we go. Nothing can be seen in Peterborough as we speed past, the fog is so thick I can only just make out the outlines of some wagons.

The Hull Trains breakfast baguette is still excellent again this morning, surely as they're both First companies they could teach scotrail a thing or two.

Very slow progress is made through Grantham and Retford, apparently we're stuck behind an East Coast service that is running late, which is fine until we call at Retford and were put into the loop platform and further delayed to allow a following East Coast to pass. As my intention was to get the Leeds train I was hoping we wouldn't get overtaken by that too as it was literally right behind us. Arrival at Doncaster was into platform three, fine I thought - just a dash down the stairs and back up again - huh, talk about making it difficult, the train stopped at the far end of platform 3, so there was a mad dash down the platform first. On arrival at Leeds it seems we were lucky to get there, a person had been hit by a train at Stevenage and all London lines were blocked with trains from Leeds cancelled.

I hung around at Leeds for a while but there was nothing that I needed turning up, so I had a quick trip up to Crossgates on 158859 so as to see if there was anything on Neville Hill, all I could see were 2 333's and and HST set blocking everything ele in. Crossed over the platforms to go back to find that the return working was now 15 minutes Late, so I watched a few 185's speed through - still not seeing 108 though. Eventually 158792 pulled in to take me back to Leeds where one of the 333's has now moved and uncovered 142027 - first winner of the day!

Nothing but loads of delays at Leeds, train faults and signalling affecting XC, the PUT affecting EC and signalling affecting TPE. I took 170301 to Manchester Piccadilly, spotting loads of 185's on the way - except the one I'm looking for, and changed onto 185117 to Preston to see what was running the Ormskirk shuttles today - can't find it in my notes but it may have been 359 - not a required one anyway. Onto 350410 now to see if there are any 153's on the Morecambe, but there's only dud 156's up there, although there is 66512 & 92029 passing on freight.

My next planned move is the VT service to Crewe, but as 185121 pulls in I figure I might as well get that one red-penned as far as Preston where I see 66431 heading north with containers before I pick up 390127 to Crewe. 66554, 92041, 08507, 47848 & 97302 are all seen in the station or yards, though no required units turn up.

390103 pulls in with a. Manchester train so I jump on, and as we arrive at Piccadilly my luck finally changes , 142040 pulls out with a Hazel Grove service and 150272 is sitting in an adjacent platform loading up with the 1709 to Chester, 2 winners for the price of 1!

I hop over to platform 13/14 to see if anything else turns up in the next 30 minutes or so, and am rewarded when 142001 arrives at 1730 with a service from Chester, and shortly afterwards 86627&86613 run through P14 with a freight to Trafford Park, 86613 being required.

Time now for me to get my TPE back towards Leeds and 185116 was waiting with the Middlesbrough service. So I sat back thinking - not bad, 4 units and 5 loco for sight and a few more for units for haulage, when as we passed through Ashburys 142011 went the other way with the 1737 Marple - Manchester. Make that 5 units then!

I noted a few more 185's passing us as we rolled back towards Leeds - in fact I've seen 38 out of the 51 units today - just not the one I was looking for 1 - damn you 185108, I'll get you one day. A final twist as I'm packing things up and readying to leave at Leeds to get the London train, 158787 departed with the 1840 Sheffield train, that'll be 6 for the day, not a bad haul.

Finally I boarded 82220 & 91107 for my final 1st class experience of my trip, I'm going to miss not getting all the freebies and the space when reality dawns on me that finally my epic adventure is over.
Now all I've got to do is work out the stats!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

So now my adventure with my "Golden Ticket" is finally over, and I've had a chance to add up the statistics.

Since starting out at 0500 on Wednesday 3rd September until 2214 on Tuesday 16th September, I have covered a total of 7504 miles & 58 chains, an average of 536 miles per day, and have travelled from as far as Ashford in Kent to Penzance in Cornwall, to Holyhead in Wales to Edinburgh and Inverness in Scotlandand many places in between - and a cost of a little under 7p per mile.

I have travelled on 146 different multiple units operated by 15 different TOC's, been on 11 HST's, and 18 loco hauled trains.

I have also managed to mark off 51 required multiple units and 52 locomotives previously unseen.

I hope people have enjoyed reading my travel diaries and thanks you all for your encouraging comments as I went along. It's certainly been an interesting experience and I've found it quite therapeutic and a pleasure to write them up for your perusal.

Glad you had an excellent time and I'm well happy you shared your experience on a Golden Ticket with us all :)

It must feel weird going back to reality, it sure did on both my ALRs! A good bit of mileage and lots of winners for sight and haulage, not to mention track!

Know the feeling all too well with 185108, it's one of the biggest irritances with a class that works routes over a massive area!

Re Postye's excellent report, 150217 has had the dent for about 3 years after a slight disagreement with another unit whilst shunting on Canton Depot.

I may have to apologise re 150261 due to the fact I may have misunderstood the message I read elsewhere. I have seen pictures elsewhere of 150261 at Exeter so definitely confirmed back in service. It's come out with plain blue livery like the cascaded 150s in 2011 instead of advertising attractions as previously displayed.

I must've got really lucky with 150261. It was stabled in Bristol TM in the bay at the south end (platform 2?) which as I understand is not used for service trains, and it somebody looked up the TOPS and it wasn't showing as being in service on the Friday, but operated the Mendip Sprinter Railtour on the Saturday. I don't know when it returned from wolverton but I must just been in the right place at the right time. The non-advertising livery was what made it stand out tbh.
