My experience using GTR's KeyGo pay-as-you-go ITSO card with multiple breaks of journey

Up until now I've only been using the pay-as-you-go feature on GTR's KeyGo ITSO card for simple journeys as I had little faith that the system would cope with multiple breaks of journey.

Having read various comments on other threads, I thought I'd share my recent experience here.

On Saturday, I took a return trip from Horley to Royston and made multiple stops on the outward and return legs. The weekend fare with railcard discount is £17.00.

My routing was:
Horley - St. Pancras - (walk to) - King's Cross - Potters Bar - Hatfield - Hitchin - Royston - Letchworth - (forced tap out/in at Stevenage due to station layout) - Hertford North - City Thameslink - London Bridge - Horley.

All the taps were recorded correctly on the app/website (but not in chronological order) and each journey had the single leg price quoted making a total of £51.65.

Today I find that all the individual segments have now been consolidated into one correct ticket but the credit card linked to the KeyGo account has been charged the full £51.65.

The KeyGo account showed a credit balance of £34.65 and had a button to click to request a refund which I duly did.
Very presumptuous of GTR to assume I'd want to give them a free loan, rather than just charge £17.00 once the journey had been finalised.

Only selected taps are shown under the journey history too, which appear to have been randomly chosen:

Horley to London St Pancras
Hatfield (Herts) to Hitchin
Hitchin to Royston
Stevenage to Hertford North
City Thameslink to London Bridge

Perhaps 5 is the max number their system can cope with.

I was right to have low expectations but luckily wasn't using a debit card to make the payment or could have been out of pocket if I had not been closely monitoring.

I’m not happy with my KeyGo experiences on what are straightforward journeys. I’ve suffered from missing taps, tap-ins recorded as tap-outs and vice-versa.

Good that they’ve charged you correctly, albeit by overcharging and then crediting your account.

I've never had this happen personally. For me, all BoJ's are handled correctly under one "ticket". A shame you had an issue, but good that the refund process is very simple.

An inexcusably bad experience. In my GWR PAYG case (https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/gwr-payg.243198/#post-6400943) when I was charged for an incorrect journey across the opening of an open jaw it was because they had not yet collected all the taps. In your case they had all the taps but still overcharged you, and then assumed you would want to accept credit.

It seems that the whole charging process is running ahead of the system's ability to correct and process data.

Considering that these systems have been around for some time, and are probably all using the same software the design and implementation are unacceptably bad.

Ive never had issues with the GTR key go either with extensive use over a number of years. My biggest annoyance is that it's still not been extended to cover journeys on GTR services that fringe with other operators, Portsmouth, Southampton, Ashford International and Peterborough etc.
