Living in Newcastle, I often get the metro to Central station in order to get a train.

I've noticed that in the booking system, there is a destination NCZ - Newcastle Central Metro.

I've read in various places that this gives a Zone A Metro ticket, yet cannot find anything official.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks in advance

I remember reading on the Nexus forums something about what national rail tickets you could buy that would allow travel on Metro. There are a few options I believe, your best bet would to probably give Nexus a call in the morning and ask them.

The link on the old Nexus Discussion forum has disappeared, but IIRC NCZ basically means the Newcastle Metro Central Zone i.e zone A. The add on will be the same price as a one zone single. It isn't promoted well enough and the only benefit in buying one is not having to stop and buy a ticket at a Metro ticket machine.

I also have no idea if it will work the barriers at Central Station Metro when they go live, but most probably not.

The following add-ons are available as follows

Rail Add-ons
Combined tickets are on sale, which include rail travel to Newcastle and then Metro conveyance to a station inside Tyne and Wear. Combined tickets may be sold at any Rail station.

For tickets to Newcastle Airport, compile the fare by adding the rail fare to Newcastle to the Metro fare from Newcastle to Newcastle Airport;
Single (SDS, SOS, FOS, FDS) - £2·40
Return (CDR, SDR, SSR, SVR, SOR, FDR, FOR) - £3.90
7 Day Season - £15.10

For tickets to stations in the Tyne and Wear Metro Inner Zone, compile the fare by adding the rail fare to Newcastle to the Metro fare shown below;
Single (SDS, SOS, FOS, FDS) - £1·40.
Return (CDR, SDR, SSR, SVR, SOR, FDR, FOR) - £2.00
7 Day Season - £8.30

For tickets to stations in the Tyne and Wear Metro All Zone Metro System, compile the fare by adding the rail fare to Newcastle to the Metro fare shown below;
Single (SDS, SOS, FOS, FDS) - £2·40
Return (CDR, SDR, SSR, SVR, SOR, FDR, FOR) - £3.90
7 Day Season - £15.10

Sounds like there is no advantage to it other than not having to buy a metro ticket.

Cheers for the replies

But the add-on fares are cheaper than the current Metro fares, so save money compared to buying separate tickets.

I'm fairly sure that the add on ticket used to be the same price as just a normal Metro single/Daysaver ticket. I'll ask around.

I think they used to be, but were never changed when Metro fares last changed.

If only there was a rail TVM at Newcastle Aurport, or at least the Metro TVM sold North East Explorer tickets,. As it is, those arriving from a flight and using the Metro have no choice but to buy a full fare Metro ticket even though other options are theoretically available. Rather a rip -off really.
