Hi guys, there is an Listing on Network Rail Careers for a 18 month Signaling Secondment job in Manchester. Just wondering if this would likely turn into a full time role before the end of it as it seems odd to train someone in such a specialist skill set for just 18 months, or if it was for just 18 months would having that experience make finding another role in the rail sector easier? Offering as a secondment seems odd for external so maybe it was meant for internal candidates but posted wrongly?

It’s a grade 3, I don’t know if I’m correct on this but that’s at the very low end of the signaller grade. Says it’s for north Manchester too so I would guess it’s for a branch line that’s infrequently used. However, I could (and probably am) be completely wrong. But my assumption is it’s not that specialist and that’s why it’s for 18 months (possibly a signalling renewal programme planned, therefore the signal box is to be closed). Possibility of a job in Manchester ROC after for the right candidate, but that’s a grade 7 or 8 (I think) so quite a leap. Hopefully someone will correct me though.

From reading the signalling thread it seems there is very little chance that NR will spend 80k training someone, only to let them go after a short period. And the grade doesn’t matter, you can walk off the street into a grade 9 post and there’s nothing stopping you from applying for any grade internally.

That’s fair enough, I will admit I know nothing about being a signaller. That’s why I was trying to make it clear in my response. I was just sharing my assumptions.
