How did you find the move from the Police to being a driver? Any regrets? I am currently in the Police having nearly done a decade and have applied for a trainee
Pretty straight forward. Actually very straight forward. Haven't regretted it for a minute. I was surprised at how institutionalised the railways were though - was like i'd not left the police!

I applied for a couple of jobs and ended up relocating (I got one locally but fancied a total change). So now I have no grief, a better salary (not as good pension admittedly) and the travel perks that come with it. To be fair I always promised myself i'd never stay in the police service just for the pension anyway, which was a good thing as Windsor was just talking about changing it when I left and would not have fancied an extra 7 years!!

Thanks for the reply, following the changes etc I am ready for a career change! Its obviously a massive decison but i have considered driving for sometime. What are the pension contributions? And is the retirement age 68? I assume these differ with each TOC or is it a combined scheme?

Think it's 65 at my TOC though not actually paid it that much attention as i'm nowhere near it yet! There is the Railway Pension Scheme that most (if not all) TOCs are involved with. Best to look at their site for info really as i'm no expert in the field. It is still final salary though.

Sounds like my time in the police. Wasted best part of a decade and thought time for a change and am now a driver.

It seems the TOCs look favourably on those with emergency services/military background so best get applying. It's still not easy though but tackling it with an optimistic attitude will definitely help!

Good luck! :)

Let's hope that's the case then as I've 23 years as an aircraft tech in the RAF and 8 years police service behind me. :)
