- the big imperative (so it seems to me) is serving Birmingham-London and Manchester-London. This seems quite wrong to me.
Birmingham to London and vice versa is where there is predicted to be more people than capacity, and hence the need for more trains.
Perhaps if this is not important we should build HS2 as a circular route in one of the less populated parts of the fens. Level ground so no expensive earthworks, not many people so no one to offend. A circular route would allow maximum train mileage on the minimum amount of track so improving the efficency stats, particually if there were no stations so the train could stay at maximum speed all day.
