New south-east london link?

Currently there are no rail options to access North Greenwich from the South (hence large bus station), likewise from east London you can get south of the river on Jubilee but then get sent back towards town... There is an existing line to the Tarmac quarry at the base of the peninsula, but unfortunately no rail corridor seems to have been allowed for up the greenwich peninsula despite being a recent development. However with a tunnel from the quarry site to Canning town (via North Greenwich), and a new curve joining the quarry line to the blackheath tunnel, and new overground line could be created from Stratford to the south (a number of options such as Tulse Hill or more south east locations such as Catford if additional curve added before Lewisham, which would be a challenge). It avoids the mainlines. To connect with the main 4 track line into London Bridge a new station could be build at the crossover (highlighted yellow) and also extend the Lewisham DLR 600mm to the same station to give Canary Wharf/Greenwhich a connection to this mainline via the DLR. North of Canning Town the line could be shared with Jubilee so some trains from both services terminate at Canning Town depending on capacity.

Since Stratford has become so well connected, it is noticable on the GA trains how many people get off there (on the first train in it is normally over half), there needs to be some hubs with good links in the south too.

That looks similar to the new bus routes planned for the new tunnel, their popularity may show what demand there is for a rail link. Also, the new DLR trains and their increased service will give a small help to Lewisham as a hub soon.

Is your plan to use the third part of the triangle to the freight terminal and from there go to the east of the Silvertown tunnel, and surface on its east, with the jubilee line? Where you’ve put the portal is a bridge over the main road. I can see this on a 2D map but as soon as I add elevations it becomes questionable.

The southern most station in the plan is Ladywell, which becomes dedicated to the Bakerloo line in the Hayes extension proposal.

Welcome to the forum!

So an entirely new-build service from Lewisham to Stratford via Canning Town, competing with the existing DLR route via Greenwich.
An extension via Peckham competing with the East London and Elizabeth via Whitechapel.
I can't see what massive benefit this brings, sorry, except to the Greenwich Peninsula (if it needs a dedicated link to Lewisham, that could be done much more economically).

Thanks for the replies. Sorry the map wasnt much good, the lines in yellow are existing, blue is new. And i didn't show the lines the whole way but it could continue on to a hub such as Tulse Hill. agree its similar principle to the DLR lewisham extension however the 2 key main lines from london bridge (to croydon & orpington) bypass it. If the DLR was extended to New Cross & New Cross Gate it would connect to these, perhaps thats a better option!

Another, perhaps simpler improvement to connectivity might be to reinstate platforms on the fast lines at New Cross, allowing main line passengers from Kent and Sussex to connect directly to the London Overground.

Feels to me like a DLR opportunity. It's a shame the Woolwich route curves back underground - as connecting with Eltham, Grove Park and taking over the Bromley North line, might be a good radial arc.

Doesn't help North Greenwich especially.

The revival of the former link from the Angerstein Wharf line to the line enabling trains to run off the branch straight into the Blackheath tunnel is the biggest problem. This link was removed some time after the South-Eastern Railway purchased the branch and adjacent land. They had their Signal works here. The railway sold off the land several decades ago after the signal works was closed. It is occupied by industrial buildings used, I believe, by the Metropolitan Police as one of their major car pounds.

Mind you, the revival of this link would assist the running of the freight trains from the wharf as they'd not have to take the long way round via Slade Green and the Bexleyheath line to get to Lewisham and the Nunhead line.
