I spent a most enjoyable day on the platforms at Newton Abbot on Friday and there was quite a bit of work being done there. Can anyone enlighten me as to why please.

It could've been done by leaving platform 4 many moons ago & having two separate islands. Times where different however on the railways in the 70s & 80s with only thoughts of less traffic & line closures unlike the very opposite picture we see today.Interesting, thanks for that. I wonder if there is any provision, and space at either end, for a re-instated 4th platform? You could then separate the Paignton and Plymouth services east of the station.

All year round. Installed a couple of years ago.Was a surprise to me when I visited in August, that Newton Abbot had ticket barriers installed? Manned quite frequent as well. How long have they been in ? Barriers in operation all year round? Or just Summer ?
