I passed the NMT at Leamington Spa today (it was stopped in the up main). The rear power car was 43062 "John Armitt", but I noticed the leading power car was named too. It was one of the buffer fitted ones (obviously), either 43013 or 43014, and it was named "The Railway Observer". Does anyone know which power car has been named, and when it happened?

Thats what you get for been on a lower rate of pay than the previous person in charge of Network Rail.

Can,t think of anything that was named after him?

Gerald Corbett of Railtrack was more famous for closeing down Woolworths, it was a good job he didn,t take over Network Rail, I wonder where they would be now?

Hi,

Saw the NMT today, it's 43014 that's named, don't know when!

First time 43014 been formally named I think - one of about 30 power cars never to have had an official name (ignoring the Rio ones!)

Corbett was arguably more famous as being in charge of Railtrack during the first three major rail accidents after privatisation (Southall, Ladbroke Grove and Hatfield).

More people will know about him being at Railtrack during this time than his time at Woolies where he wasn't as much in the public limelight.

I believe Gerald Corbett did not get the credit he was due. Delay performance during his tenure at Railtrack is still unbeatable by today's standard. He was a brilliant chairman who could have done a lot more for the railways if he had been left to it. To the railways loss, he has went on to make large successes for the subsequent companies he has worked for.

I agree, he was brilliant. The accidents were not down to him, and he was good at standing up for the railways.
