Our journey home on the 17:38 from Victoria to Purley this evening was enlivened by a number of extremely loud thumps that seemed to be coming from one of the bogies of our Class 455 unit, the front unit of an 8-car train with two Class 456 on the rear. (I mentioned it to the driver after we arrived in Purley; he said he'd investigate.)

Any idea what it could have been? Every time there was a bump (it happened about 4 times) the whole body of the car seemed to reverberate and it happened both when going through points and on straight track, and in each case at low speed, below 20mph. I don't think it was anything to do with the electrical shoegear - it didn't seem to be coming from that part of the train. Faulty suspension or drawgear perhaps?

Secondary suspension bottoming out would be my guess, it happens quite a lot when empty and is not a problem just bloody annoying.

It just needs the load valve adjusting.

When I was Riding Inspector the 455s used to suffer from that quite a bit. There are bars around the centre casting (from what I remember) that have rubber bushes. When these bushes wear it results in a distinctive clunk.

The unit requires lifting to replace the bushes I think.

For those of us that aren't experts on 455s, what's a 'cc nut'?
