Has this station got gates on - I am visiting on Wednesday on a Day Trip from Falkirk.

Secondly - have I dropped a bollo*k putting this town on my "North of England East Coast First Class for Next to Nowt" tour

There don't seem to be any museums or galleries in the town itself !!!

No gates at all at Northallerton. I can't comment on the town as I've only ever been once but it's never struck me as a place to spend a day out on its own.

(And no, you can't smoke on the station!)

Near where the 3 ridings meet
Town centre about 1/2 mile from station.
Never seen any museum or gallery but there is a variety of shops on the high street.
If that is your sort of thing, not mine though.

There are some good shops in town plus Bettys Tea rooms!

Does your schedule give you time to get the bus to Leeming Bar to visit the Wensleydale Railway? (or alternatively get the bus to Bedale or Leyburn) - the buses call outside the station on the main road.

There isn't all that much to do at Northallerton (other than what's been suggested above). It's the sort of place you travel from to go somewhere else, not the sort of place you travel to specifically visit ;)

Wensleydale railways not too far. Or theres a Tesco you can buy some sandwiches, crisps, etc and do some photting and spotting of east coast trains going at ni-on full speed.

Thanks, the only spotting of EC I am partial to is that of the trolley with the free booze on in First Class

Will check the town out and retire to the Library if all else fails !!!

If you are interested in landscape photography, the Joe Cornish Gallery in Zetland Street should be worth a visit.

Geordie back from exile.
If you are really (REALLY!!) stuck the '30' mile marker (from York) used to be in the middle(ish) of the down platform at Northallerton. Sad I know that I know that but what the hey....:)

Always wanted a photo of that for some strange reason I cannot fathom, together with the '156' mile marker on one of the Doncaster platforms. Wierd I know.....<D

As a former resident of Northallerton perhaps i could be of some use:

1) As SWT mentioned there is the Joe Cornish Gallery in Zetland street about 15 minutes for the station

2) Bettys in the High Street is very popular if your budget will stretch, I can recommend a fat rascal and a pot of tea

3) Couple of decent pubs. Recommendations are subjective but I like, because they do a decent pint of ale, the Tithe Bar on Friarage Street (more expensive but nice and no chavs - open form noon) and the Tickle Toby on the High Street. Less selective but a decent pint. The Station Hotel was closed for a refurb last time I was there. If it is open it is, surprisingly, next to the station!

4) The walk from the station is down South Parade and the High Street, both very pleasant roads if now busy with traffic. South Parade is tree lined and has fine Edwardian and Victorian Villas. The High Street is a much older street and is very wide with some nice buildings that are a little spoiled by modern shop fronts. A the bottom of South Parade is a Tesco if you need supplies

5) There is a market on a Wednesday and Saturday on the High Street

6) County Hall is right at the front of the station and is a nice building, as ids the court house round the corneron Race Course Lane ( sorry the race course went in the late 1800’s)

7) Further afield is the Wensleydale Railway at Leeming Bar. The Dales and District no 73. Bus goes from right outside of the station. It leaves at 09/39 past the hour and arrives at White Rose Hotel in Leeming Bar (opposite the station) at 24/54. Trains leave Leeming at 10:00/11:30/13:15/15:00 & 16:00. (The 15:00 is the last round trip) The round trip takes about 2hrs 45 minutes. The normal operation is a heritage DMU (101/117/110). During the summer they run two trains being the DMU and a diesel hauled train. They have a couple of 20’s a couple of 47’s a 14, a 37 and a 25 in minus a cab! (oh and an 03). It is a nice little run though some decent scenery. ( I doubt you will have time for more than a round trip at best but Leyburn is a really nice Dales town and worth a look)

8) Richmond Castle is really nice but is a bit of a journey (in fact you might be better form Darlington!) You get a fantastic view form the top of the Keep and Richmond is a really nice town. The old station at the bottom of the hill is a good place for a quick meal and a drink. The market square by the castle is also worth exploring. The Green Howards Museum is also in Richmond market sqaure For the bus you will need to walk down to the Buck Inn by the church at the far end of the High Street (20 minutes) and look for a Dales & District 54/55 ( the 54 may pass the station but I cant remember. They are not frequent!

The station has no gates, a small ticket selling building with a tea hut run by the Wensleydale Railway. Prices are decent. A shelter on each platform with a posh bus shelter on the southbound platform. That is it. If you want a fag walk you will have to go off the station on the south bound platform but northbound walk to the very north end of the platform and down three steps into the car park ;)

TBH there is isn’t much to do. Depending how long you are there have a wander down the high street, have a coffee, find a pub, read you book and get back on the train!

Meh, it's what you're interested in. Comments like Butts' (even if meant in jest) are typical of those who are either ignorant of other people's interests or have so little going on in their own life that they feel the need to laugh at someone else's.

Take a chill pill ....it was a humorous aside...that draw with the Berwick variety of your team has stressed you out

As I know you are a keen smoker Butts and if you are spending some amount of time at the station.......

Just position yourself on the northern end of platform 2 alongside the advertising hoarding. Not only is it an excellent place to observe passing traffic both on the main and low levels, its adjacent to four or five steps that lead into the car park. Just pop up and down them at will to light up. :D

Anyone would think I was an addict the way people go on

I can go at least 5 mins without a snout in unrestricted areas

On a train...somewhere!
As a current resident : Don't visit
You will be hard pushed to find anywhere where there is so little to see...the points of interest can probably be covered in an hour or two!

I take it you don't work for the Tourist Board

I have printed off a "Town Trail" from the Council which will take me to 29 highlights from no 1 The Parish Church to no 29 The Bishops Palace

Well can I just say you may have a point after spending a rainsoaked couple of hours this morning. However the Library is good and they have given me a Card so I can use the internet anywhere in North Yorks for 30 mins per day free !!! (at Libraries) will be handy for Whitby which I am visiting soon.

it is just a small market town in North Yorkshire. it is a decent enougth place to live but not much happens.

I did hop on a Train to Thirsk which does have a Weatherspoons (£3.05) for a Double Cognac and a Smoking Area

Also visited James Herriot Museum quite good but a bit steep at £8.50 to get in - I thought everyone in Yorkshire was tight !!!

Grand Central Train on way back from Thirsk to Northallerton - straight out of "British Rail Central Casting" even got some old BR signs on windows - thats a first for me.

Both Northallerton and Thirsk Stations must be a shadow of their former selves with those silly muppet like Ticket Offices - what happened to the previous buildings ?

Did notice the Station Hotel in Northallerton does what looks like a decent "All you can eat breakfast " for a fiver - would put East Coasts to shame !!

Not so much Thirsk, although there were platforms on the fast lines as well as Thirsk Town station.

Northallerton however was considerably larger than what is left today. The high level had four (I think) through platforms and north and south bays and also a station on the low level as well.

As for what happened to the buildings or what was there, not sure. But I'm pretty certain there was more than the little ticket office and shop that are underneath now!

I'm glad you mentioned "Town Station" that must have been somewhere near the Town unlike the "Ryanair" location of the current one . Got that soaked legging it into Thirsk my fag nearly went out.

The current station should be Thirsk Racecourse

Probably didn't ever serve much of a town though, bearing in mind it closed to regular trains in the 1850s ;)

They do their job though, I'm quite a fan of the compact layout, it's a cheap yet useful solution for places like Thirsk - without original buildings but nowhere near large or busy enough to warrant a total new-build. I'm surprised you haven't picked up on the near identical building at Alnmouth for Alnwick!

Alnmouth is not so bad as there are no signs of any "old buildings" unlike Thirsk and Northallerton. At least the information boards work at the other two unlike Alnmouth:p

I would disagree entirely - plently of interesting traffic and North Yorkshire is lovely. Certainly far worse place Id rather be....
