Over the next couple of years, a new station building will be constructed at Northampton alongside the existing 1960s structure. We will be using this thread to post news and photos of the work as it progresses. At the moment, the archaeologists are examining the site while a temporary footbridge and lifts are constructed in readiness for the major works to begin.

A view that is already history, showing the short stay car park in front of the existing station entrance. This area is now largely taken over by the archaeological dig. The first photo below shows the area closed off but, due to snow fall, untouched. The second photo was taken a few days after the work started and shows the cobbles of the original Victorian station being uncovered. The original station was on the same site as the new station will occupy.

The current station is so, so depressing. Looking forward to the new one.

The remains of the castle were cleared away to build the station in the 19th century. I notice that there is a "British Rail Social Club" nearby.

I think the castle was more under the main car park where the goods shed used to be. I think there are the remains of some of it on the other side of St Andrews Road? by the BRSA. But that is at a much higher level than the yard so all trace on railway property may have been removed by lowering the land level. There is a small gateway near the traffic lights in the second picture, that is supposed to be a reused section of the old castle.

The archaeological dig has uncovered some sections of Castle wall under the short stay car park (the area surrounded by wooden boards above) and a photo will be posted in the next day or two...

As promised, a new photo of the dig. The remains of the castle are visible running left to right...
