Myself and a couple of workmates are wanting to do the Settle to Carlisle "run" later this month, probably on a Sunday, one of my mates has got some vouchers from the Wakefield Express newspaper entitling him to purchase up to 4 adult "Day Ranger" tickets for £10 each, would these tickets be valid for travel from HUD to CAR via LDS, then returning by the quicker route via MAN?

Only valid on Northern, so you can't go CAR to PRE direct (except via Ravenglass et al, which would certainly not be quicker! )

Yes, that journey can be done on Northern rail services. However I am not sure if it will be quicker! ;)

I don't know what you mean by the quicker route. The only restriction is that you must travel on Northern services.

Using next Sunday (22nd) as an example, the only realistic chance of completing all this in one day is to go back via the Settle & Carlisle and then Clitheroe and Blackburn (and/or Preston) to get to Manchester. You can get the 0751 from Huddersfield to Leeds (0825), then the 0900 to Carlisle (1154), then back on the same train (1259) to Hellifield (1446). There is a 1455 to Blackpool North which will give you a number of options thereon.

You could go via Hellifield/Clitheroe to Preston/Manchester on a Sunday now but as Yorkie says, probably not quicker than via Leeds!

It's not going to be possible on a Sunday.

On a Saturday, I found this:

Carlisle 1525
Preston 1929

Preston 1949
Manchester Vic 2045

Manchester Vic 2121
Leeds 2258

or

Manchester Vic 2127
Huddersfield 2211

But then no train to Wakefield!

There is a 2045 from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield, which makes the last train to Wakefield, but obviously you can't make that.

As well as the Cumbrian Coast, the real problem part is Lancaster to Preston: there are very few Northern services on this stretch of track (4 per day, one early morning, two late at night, leaving only one at a reasonable hour)

Thanks for the replies, I think my mate was confusing the "Day Ranger" with the "Day Rover" which I understand is valid on all train companies services, he had suggested using TPE from HUD to LDS, and again from CAR to MAN, and MAN to HUD.
I told him the tickets may be "Northern Only" and would check it out on the forum, so once again thanks for clearing that up.
Will have to have a rethink now, we had considered starting at Skipton, does anyone know if there is free car parking there or suggest another starting point.

There is no such thing as a "Day Rover" according to ATOC. A Rover is a ticket valid for longer than a day and a Ranger is a ticket valid for one day only. They are both normally valid on all operators' services.

Of course when implemented there are plenty of exceptions such as the West Yorkshire Day Rover, and the Northern-specific Ranger as mentioned in this thread.

The North Country Rover is a completely different, and inter-available product. As it has no TOC restriction it is, arguably, valid on all operators in the relevant area. (It's better value when East Coast are diverting via Carlisle!)

The £10 Northern tickets are a TOC specific promotional product and are definitely Northern only, and some of our friendly guards who work on TPE have a tough time when users of these Northern Day Rangers are out and about ;) (edit: I think one of them may be about to read this thread....)

I've heard plenty about them (and would like to get hold of one myself!) but I must admit I've not actually seen what they look like.

Sorry my mistake I should have stated "Rail Rover", as advertised on the Northern website.

My good lady and I are using ours on Saturday.

Wakefield Westgate-Leeds (any TOC as we're Metrocard holders)
Leeds-Carlisle
Carlisle-Ravenglass
Ravenglass-Lancaster
Lancaster-Leeds
Leeds-Wakefield Westgate

We've done quite a few of these, and for never more than £10. Had a few freebies as Northern like sending me vouchers when I've had cause to complain!

If any of you know someone who works for Northern, we are issued a book of discount vouchers for friends and family.

Reduces the price of this ticket to £5.
