There's some local discussion on the 17:53 service removal on the Huddersfield to Sheffield service - The hourly service leaves around xx:09, about 11 minutes after the service from Sheffield gets into Huddersfield - I'm not overly familiar with the service, but it appears to run as a two train shuttle, one would presume that the 17:53 was either for extra capacity when we had Pacers on this route or facilitates a train relocation to Sheffield. Any thoughts or knowledge on why this service has been removed ? More curious than anything - thanks in advance.

Going back far enough, ISTR this was a through (stopping) train from Leeds which ceased to exist at one of several timetable changes - and in any case got reallocated to TPE.
1. Unintended(?) consequence - the unit for this train now has to come empty from Leeds Holbeck, which is wasteful, but as the last Northern franchise specified it (at a guess) it had to run.
Someone else may know if the unit is needed at the Sheffield end, but I somehow doubt it.
Present arrangements mean that DfT/Northern can ignore any previous commitments in order to save money (which it obviously does!) and it is an obvious economy.

2. As the TPE train it connects with has also been withdrawn, I imagine the 1753 would have carried fewer passengers from December anyway, which gives a further rationale.

And how often did it actually run and not get cancelled?

In the grand scheme of things it's not like it's a long wait for the following service from Huddersfield. Unlike some timetable cuts

It ran all this week except for Wednesday when nothing at all was moving at Hudds.

It appears the set runs empty from Leeds to Huddersfield, forms the 17.53 to Sheffield and then a train to Adwick. I suspect the Adwick train can be rediagrammed and therefore the 17.53 is stand alone. Given there is a train from Huddersfield less than 20 minutes later it's not the biggest disaster.

This service causes operational issues at Huddersfield for TPE, as the terminating 'stopper' from Manchester Piccadilly has to terminate in platform 8 and run ECS onto the Bradley single line, then run back to Huddersfield to start in service on the stopper back to Manchester Piccadilly.

It causes confusion on platform 8, and creates unnecessary delays for the Saltburn behind, and the Leeds Stopper, not withstanding the traincrew have to sign the route via Calder Valley (which not all do) as the Single Line is part of that route.

But then stables at Doncaster overnight and cycles onto Scunthorpe services the next day.
