On Saturday 4th March I'm making a journey from Sheffield to Cleethorpes return, Using the Northern cheap tickets they offered last month (£1.50 each way).

Out: SHF 0753 Arr: 0957
Rtn: CLE 15:11 Arr: 1717

My question is, On the Saturday just gone 11/2/23 the 15:11 return service was canceled with the next Northern services 4 hours later on.

A. Are you expected to wait the fours hours for the next Northern service and claim delay repay £1.50
B. Buy a new ticket to travel by Transpennine, Which will vary from £12 Advance if available, or up to £26 Std Sgl

Thanks

If option A, you would be able to get complimentary return tickets for Northern Trains (one for 1 to 2 hours delay, two for over two hours). These can be good. I've done Wigan to Lincoln twice and Wigan to Bridlington on such tickets. One of those arose from a £1 ticket.

Northern and TPE have mutual ticket acceptance if your service is cancelled and there is an hour or more wait until the next Northern or TPE service you were booked on. This currently expires on Wednesday 22nd February but has been extended numerous times.

Thanks for this advice, were do I find if it gets updated?

If Northern and TPE are claiming this is some kind of generous ticket acceptance scheme they are talking absolute rubbish.

Once disruption would cause you to be delayed by more than an hour you are entitled to be re-routed, and this is something that applies to any TOC. TPE will be obligated to offer assistance to get you to your destination, and in this case will most likely re route you by allowing you to travel on one of their services.

This right is set out and safeguarded in Article 16 of Regulation (EC) No. 1371/2007:
Where it is reasonably to be expected that the delay in the arrival at the final destination under the transport contract will be more than 60 minutes, the passenger shall immediately have the choice between:
[...]
(b) continuation or re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to the final destination at the earliest opportunity; or

To clarify, it is Northern that are obliged to arrange the re-routing, as the TOC at fault. Unless Northern had cancelled all their remaining services, leaving the OP stranded, they could not force TPE to accept their ticket without endorsement etc.

If Northern refuse to arrange ticket acceptance/endorsement etc. in the event of the 15:11 being cancelled, and TPE don't voluntarily offer to accept the ticket (e.g. under the current arrangements which have been continually renewed for many months) then the OP would be entitled to claim back the cost of any additional ticket they needed to travel on TPE.

In all likelihood TransPennine will probably cancel most of their Saturday trains from Cleethorpes in any case, so you may end up waiting 4 hours for the next Northern service!

There is a damn good fish & chip restaurant on the pier though!

Couldn't you ask the TPE guard before you board, should the scenario arise?

Especially if you've been waiting around a few hours?

Just a thought.
