I have a feeling it was a 3 car 158? I saw one at Manchester Victoria earlier ostensibly bound for Wigan Wallgate.

Wouldn't 158s have the same issue as the 153s, being that the doors pop out and have a risk of fowling the platform edge, which I believe is the reason that 153s aren't cleared.

158s have been regularly been working through Wallgate on booked services to Southport for several months now. Traincrew knowledge would also be a bar to 153s

153s prohibited through Wallgate as they always have been. 158s are fine through Wallgate as they have been for donkeys years.

Victoria/Blackburn crews that sign to Wigan will sign 153s. 153s however are still barred from Wallgate but could run if service is diverted into North Western. Whilst 195s are cleared to use the Atherton route as a diversion they cannot be used on services that stop due to risk assessments on stepping distances etc not having been carried out. The train mentioned by the OP is almost certainly a 3 car 158.

As far as I know no Blackburn crew sign Wigan - they do Blackburn to Colne, Preston (& Ormskirk, Blackpool South) Clitheroe and Man Vic via Bolton & via Todmorden. 142/150/153/156/158.

The 158 came off the shed to replace a 150/2 which failed earlier in the day at Wigan NW. Not a bad upgrade when you can pull a 3 car 158 off Newton Heath. Does show the 195s are having an impact now.

So far as I know Llama the Vic crew that transfered to Blackburn have kept Wigan both ways on their cards, some also have Calder Valley to Leeds. The new drivers since started fresh at Blackburn since then I believe do not.

Blackburn guards definitely sign Wigan and right the way up to Southport.

Fair dos, I'm not always that well up on rear gunners but I've never had one from the ivory tower there as far as I know.
