Quick question. This afternoon I will be using the return half of this ticket.

http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=SVG&dest=NOT&rte=700&tkt=SSR

Given that Nottingham - Bedford - London St Pancras - Kings Cross - Stevenage appears to be valid on a route +Any Permitted..

...can I return today Nottingham - Bedford - West Hampstead Thameslink - Highbury and I - Finsbury Park - Stevenage on a not via London Terminals ticket?

If you can also supply the reason in case of problem I’d be grateful.

Just had a change of my plans !

According to my reading of the routeing guide, the route you suggest is not a valid route. Valid map combinations are London (which your ticket is clearly not valid for), KS and PN+KP - the latter only give you the choice of getting from Nottingham to Peterborough via Leicester or Grantham.

To explain in a little more detail, Nottingham - Bedford - West Hampstead Thameslink - Highbury & Islington - Finsbury Park - Stevenage is not a mapped permitted route for a Nottingham - Stevenage journey because the section West Hampstead - Gospel Oak - Camden Road - Highbury & Islington does not appear on any of the maps to be used for a Nottingham Group - Stevenage journey.

Ah, Thank you for the above. Does it make a difference that I have a London travelcard (annual) zones 2-3? Which should cover that north London section. Should have mentioned that but didn’t think it would have any relevance- but now it might !

From previous responses (I haven't looked it up myself) there is no valid route that takes you into the Travelcard zones.

Oh, I wondered because any permitted is valid via West Hampstead Thaneslink into St Pancras and out again from Kings Cross.
The only restriction on my ticket is not via London Terminals.
And my travelcard covers West Hampstead to Highbury and Islington. I have obviously misunderstood. Thanks.

If you have the ticket routed NOT VIA LONDON as per your link, then the route + ANY PERMITTED does not apply.

It doesn't make a difference using the return portion of a Stevenage - Nottingham route Not Via London ticket.

To find the valid routes, you have to calculate all permitted routes and then exclude all those which pass through London Group (for routeing purposes). The National Routeing Guide's Permitted Route Identifier shows that permitted Nottingham - Stevenage routes are shown:
  • using route code LONDON, and
  • on map KS, and
  • using map combination PN + KP.
Map KS allows Nottingham Group - Grantham - Peterborough, then either Peterborough - Ely - Cambridge - Hitchin or Peterborough - Huntingdon - Hitchin, then Stevenage.

Map combination PN + KP allows:
  • PN: Nottingham Group - Loughborough - either Leicester or Syston North curve - Melton Mowbray - Oakham - Peterborough
  • KP: Peterborough - Ely - Cambridge - Hitchin or Peterborough - Huntingdon - Hitchin, then Stevenage.
It seems to me that the furthest south point on the Midland Main Line permitted with the return portion of a Stevenage - Nottingham route Not Via London ticket is Leicester.

Excellent thank you. The lesson here is that you can’t go to enough fares workshops !
