Call me cynical, but because the TOCs now have no revenue risk where they fail to run a service, they're not bothered about making any effort to run trains.

I think that is a cynical view.

What is interesting is that passenger numbers today so far have been lower than normal for a strike day. I’m aware of at least one operator who planned to run some extra services, but is now not doing so as their trains are running around near empty.

Just a reminder to all if we can try to stick to just discussing the impact on services / impact on customers, rather than opinions on the strike action (or other associated actions), that would be great, thanks :)
I thought recent ticket disputes have mentioned a cut off of 22:00 previous night as the time applicable to if a service is cancelled or not.
The 22:00 cutoff relates to a the purported legitimacy of delay compensation claims. However the legality of the 22:00 cutoff is disputed; see existing threads on the subject . If anyone has any claims rejected for this reason, I suggest either replying to the Delay Repay Claims rejected thread or creating a new thread (if it's a complicated case, a new thread may be best).

Note that if a customer chooses not to travel this is completely different and instead refund procedures (not delay compensation) should be followed. If anyone is unsure, I suggest creating a new thread.

Everyone here saying it's not possible to run at least some trains at short notice, is quite frankly talking twaddle.

Additional services are often run at extremely short notice as VSTP paths on days where disruption has affected the service. It might be hard work to plan it, but it's possible to run at least some trains - as some TOCs have now proved.

Call me cynical, but because the TOCs now have no revenue risk where they fail to run a service, they're not bothered about making any effort to run trains.

Previously, where the revenue risk lay with the operators, at least some trains would have been running in this situation on many routes which have no service today.
Whilst it is possible , and control at my toc are often tasked with organising additional services . It is worth noting that there are shortages of staff there at my toc as well so no saying that the resource position in control would allow them to .

The other aspect to consider is the risks of running a somewhat limited service , if punters are expecting a full service but an extremely limited additional service is running are there going to be flashpoints of overcrowding causing additional issues and leading to claims of people being stranded etc .

The 2 trains I worked today were both very quiet from London. Although filled up quite considerably with more local journeys towards the end. The message of 'only travel if neccesary' seems to have been listened to. Would be great to see more trains in the plan for Monday and Wednesday.

An attitude that illustrates what is so wrong with today's railways. Appalling.

Merseyrail is almost completely self contained, so I imagine it is lot easier for them to reinstate services than most of the other lines.

Not as easy as a lot of people on here like to continually say, it's taken a hell of a lot of effort (& frankly goodwill) to get it up and running.

Scotrail are running a few extra E&Gs this afternoon but still no trains after the previously advertised early evening finish time.
They will reinstate rural routes no one uses on Monday, and leave the busy commuter services people use and which bring in revenue.

Going by Realtime Trains, Southeastern now appear to be running trains up to 2155 (to Ashford) while Southern's last service tonight from Victoria is a 1900 to Brighton. Last Thameslink out of London Bridge (to Three Bridges) at 2100. So 'The Computer says no' has been overcome to some extent.

Doesn't help me though; I'll still have to drive into London to pick up the Missus from a show that ends at about 2200...

It is, but it just as easy to be cynical about why RMT called off the strike at 4pm on the day before, when it would have affected striking workers' December (=Christmas) pay. Perhaps the cost of paying the staff to sit around to run no trains should be sent to RMT headquarters. Certainly the taxpayer shouldn't be taking the hit.

Indeed and it's worthwhile pointing out that Merseyrail aren't in dispute with any of their staff (having resolved their disputes some months ago, at considerable cost!). Hence goodwill is much more likely to be present, and thus assist in the service being resumed, than at most other operators.

The northern app seems to show business as usual on Monday… from Crewe to Man Picc anyway!

Why if the trains are running around empty would you spend further money running even more empty ones?
So staff are available for work and getting paid but the TOC in question can't be bothered to run services because it's read the tea leaves and decided that no one will use them. The ultimate illustration of the railways running purely for their own benefit and no one else's. I'd love to know which TOC this is.

Meanwhile, SWR are running additional journeys this evening and Greater Anglia have confirmed a full normal timetable on Monday.

So perhaps those staff available today and tomorrow are concentrating their efforts on re-instating Monday rather than chasing their tail trying to resurrect some sort of service for considerably fewer people today.

I’ve no knowledge if that’s the case, but it would be the correct thing to do if you had to make the choice.

Yawn. The RMT called off the action so the staff have very right to attend work and get paid. If the TOC doesn’t have any trains for them to work, not their (or the union’s) problem.

Would you rather the strike hadn’t been called off, fewer trains had run and more people had been inconvenienced? Largely back to normal in some places on Monday and Wednesday.

Round here, exactly the same number of trains have run today as would have been run had the strikes been on i.e. none. Last time I checked, I don't think you could get fewer trains running than that.

From the point of view of how much it's costing the taxpayer, it would have been better if today's strike had gone ahead. Perhaps there needs to be some legislation on this sort of cynical manoeuvre...

Perhaps GA would like to mention this on their website ??? Last updated 20 hours ago

Do Northern actually run their rail replacement bus services during strike days or is it just rogue timetable data?

Castleford - Huddersfield has been a rail replacement bus service for quite a while (not engineering works) and showed up in the timetables today even though no trains were running!

Will Elizabeth line trains be running normally or with a reduced service early morning timetable on Tuesday the 8th November from Heathrow?.

At least once the morning peak hits it looks like it’s a normal timetable, which is good to see so that we can see it handling large flows and an intensive service through the core and how the through service will operate.

Should be back to normal Monday.

By ‘normal’ I mean through running!

My mother had to take Thameslink all the way between King's Cross and Peterborough both ways. Thankfully, Peterborough is served by two TOCs towards London. If we moved to Grantham or Newark, it'd have been an expensive taxi...

Next step will be government to introduce a bill requiring 2 weeks notice to cancel a strike and workers who had planned to strike but don't will not be paid.

The last Liverpool St Norwich tonight was busy but not as much as I had expected. Elizabeth Line GEML services where few & far between & absolutely packed to the gunwales. Into the capital of Norfolk & everything tucked up at 18:20.

Isn’t that route closed because of engineering work between Peterborough and Grantham. If the strike wasn’t happening they would be diverting via Lincoln, but that is too challenging during the strike (Lincoln has had no service in any strike).

The last minute cancellation would be very challenging - with limited crews signing the route.

Didn't know about the engineering work. One more reason to stay put. There was a temptation to move further away for even cheaper housing, but I guess it's gone now.

Well that is not going to work.

No chance.

Why do you both say that?

yes, big renewal at Werrington, another at Grantham, and smaller works throughout between Peterborough and Doncaster.
