Hi all.

I’m currently an Off-Track Technician for Network Rail. I want to start learning new skills and qualifications to improve myself.

I would like to join the S&T Department or D&P Department in the future and I know that usually the company would train you up if successfull but I was wondering if anyone here would be able to shed some light on any courses that I can personally enroll myself on that would benefit me if I join any of these departments.

I don’t have electrical and almost no mechanical knowledge so anything from super basic to more intermediate courses that are relevant would interest me.

Thanks all and happy holidays!

If you're already at a Maintenance depot then why not approach the relevant disciplines for some advice. Bearing in mind both avenues you wish to pursue require some detailed electrical knowledge, if you're keen to advance (and that's certainly a positive trait) then suss out what roles may be available with lets say, a lower skill base i.e. Electrical Assistant, that may get your foot in the door.

As an aside, whilst S&T remains a long standing term, in reality they are both separate disciplines in their own right now due to the rapid advance in electronics engineering.

Good luck with your advancement.
