These prices are first class advance fares, on the same service

York to Kings Cross; £39.50
Darlington to Kings Cross; £94.00
Durham to Kings Cross; £67.40
Newcastle to Kings Cross; £74.70

It doesn't seem to be an isolated case either, Darlington seems to generally have less availability than the stations further north - as if living in Darlington wasn't bad enough ;)

East Coast seemed to reduce the availability of their cheapest first advance tiers at many stations about six months or so ago. It used to be fairly easy to pick up (railcard discounted) fares at £30ish from Darlington to Kings Cross on most early morning services even a month or so before travel. Now you're lucky to find one under £50 even when they first go on sale! A similar trend can be found on many flows.

The same applies to standard also, but the fare differences aren't so noticeable.

E.g., on Friday, there's about 12 trains from Newcastle with standard advance fares, but only 6 from Darlington.

Well if you are travelling from Falkirk on an Advanced 1st Darlington at £12.55 is actually cheaper than Newcastle £13.70, Durham £15.10 and York at £19odd
