I just did some work in Edinburgh, the people I was working for sent me an off peak return by email with a QR code. I printed it out. It clearly says "Off-Peak Return" on it and there wasn't any other ticket sent.
The ticket inspector on the train says I should have a separate "return" ticket with a different QR code.
Is he right? What can I do about it?

No QR codes, but based on the last ticket I got, there should be one Aztec code per portion.

Who was the retailer?

A retailing issue is not the customers problem though and rail staff are not allowed to charge you extra if an issuing error has occurred (though I cannot rule out an incorrect action being taken by someone who does not adhere to rail industry protocols and contract & consumer laws)

Did they send the email from the retailer, or attach a PDF which they had been sent?

When I’ve had return e-tickets they have been sent as two PDFs attached to one email, (named “Adult1 - Out” and “Adult1 - RTN” for the most recent one). Might they have not realised they needed to send you both?

For Advances, LNER now issue a single pdf but with outward and return shown separately (Aztec code and all). Obviously that's no guide to a walkup return.

Southern issue 2 tickets even for day returns, you have to download both e tickets to your wallet or download 2 pdfs.
